STAR OF THE MONTH - Judy Garland
Her tiny frame contained a big voice and huge heart that made her the most endearing of all Hollywood musical stars. TCM’s tribute to Judy Garland begins with The Wizard of Oz (1939), and includes his first MGM feature, Broadway Melody of 1938 where she stole the show from an all-star cast singing "You Made Me Love You" to Clark Gable’s photo. Fifteen years later, Garland made a sensational comeback in A Star Is Born (1954). TCM features 30 Garland films and 2 documentaries on July 3-9.

DIRECTOR OF THE MONTH - Edward Killy
A stalwart at RKO Studios, Edward Killy began at that studio as an assistant director. He was promoted to director in the mid-1930s with such films as Bunker Bean (1936), the story of a meek office boy with a crush on his boss’s daughter. After the caper film China Passage (1937), Killy began specializing in the studio’s B Westerns and directed Tim Holt in several, including The Fargo Kid (1941) and Riding the Wind (1941), which also featured his singing sidekick Ray Whitley performing western standards like "Back in the Saddle." See a showcase of 14 fun films directed by Edward Killy July 10-14.

Raoul Walsh’s Colorado Territory (1949) is also featured, this film is a western version of the director’s own earlier noir High Sierra (1940) which made Humphrey Bogart a star. TCM BOOK CLUB
Burt Lancaster, An American Life by Kate Buford
Did Burt Lancaster have it all? He was handsome, intelligent, witty, charming, sexy, had four Oscar nominations and an unforgettably winning smile. From his screen debut as the Swede in The Killers (1946) to easing into his twilight years in Atlantic City (1980), Lancaster had dignity, charisma and style. Burt Lancaster lived the American Dream, rising from the streets of New York and living life on the road as an acrobat in a circus to become one of Hollywood’s greatest stars. Whether he was smooching in the surf on a Hawaiian beach in From Here to Eternity (1953) or preaching Hellfire and Brimstone in Elmer Gantry (1960), Lancaster was a star. But behind the glamour, this was an intensely private man fighting his demons and struggling to hide secrets from the probing press and public. Kate Buford explores the superstar and the human being in her new biography Burt Lancaster, An American Life (Alfred A. Knopf). Visit Turnerclassicmovies.com for an exclusive interview with the author and a chance to win a signed copy of the great new book!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TWO AMERICAN ICONS
James Cagney, July 17 - 5 Movies; July 17
Ernest Hemingway, July 21 - 3 Movies; July 21
This month we offer birthday tributes to two symbols of American masculinity, both born in 1899.
James Cagney strutted across the screen with a brash self-assurance that captured the hearts of movie audiences everywhere. His breakthrough role as a Prohibition gangster in The Public Enemy (1931) catapulted him to stardom and defined his screen image. Cagney’s Best Actor Oscar came, ironically, for his role in a musical - Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), in which he played irrepressible Broadway entertainer George M. Cohan.

The name Ernest Hemingway, which has become synonymous with American machismo, was represented not only in the literary world but also on film. Among the Hemingway novels transferred memorably to the screen was To Have and Have Not (1944), which brought Bogart and Bacall together for the first time. It’s said that this movie came about because of a wager director Howard Hawks made with Hemingway that he could make a fine film out of the author’s "worst book." For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), in its TCM premiere, is adapted from Hemingway’s novel of the Spanish Civil War.

UNDERWATER WEEKEND - 12 Movies; July 14-16
The confined space of submarines have always made intense settings for adventure films from the silent version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916) to such modern-day classics as the German drama Das Boot (1981), shown in the "director’s cut" reconstructed by Wolfgang Petersen. Among our other underwater epics are Hell Below (1933), with Walter Huston and Robert Montgomery at odds on a World War I submarine and Destination Tokyo (1943), with Capt. Cary Grant in command of a World War II submarine sent into Japanese waters. Among other WWII action films set in Tokyo Bay are Run Silent, Run Deep (1958), which makes particularly effective use of the claustrophobic atmosphere aboard a sub as antagonism flares up between Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. In Operation Petticoat (1959), Cary Grant and Tony Curtis play the situation for laughs as take a party of nurses aboard yet another WWII sub.
