Stephen Ames
Stephen Ames is from Trinidad.You could say golfing is in his blood as his grandmother was the Trinidad & Tobago National Champion 20 times . Stephen attended college in Boca Raton in Florida under a golf scholarship.In 1987 he began his quest of a career in golf by playing in the Ben Hogan Tour ( now the Nike Tour). In 1992 Stephen was about to try to qualify for the P.G.A.Tour but circumstances prevented this from occurring.Not to be dissuaded Stephen began playing in the European P.G.A. Tour where he enjoyed many success including winning the Open V33 Grand Lyon in 1994 and the Benson & Hedges International Open in 1996 as well as a tie for fifth in the 1996 British Open.Yet Stephens goal was still to play in the U.S.P.G.A.Tour so in 1997 he attended the
qualifying school for the tour and placed fourth.Several factors contributed to his not being able to join the tour until the spring of 1998 where he played in the 1998 Nissan Open and placed third.Again circumstances prevented Stephen from playing until the late fall of 1998 and while the situation is not completely resolved Stephen is hopeful that he will rejoin the tour this season and fulfill his lifelong goal.Stephen currently resides in Calgary,Alberta Canada with his wife Jodi and their son Justin and apparently not making all the tour dates has not stopped Stephen from keeping busy as the couple are expecting another child in the near future.
UPDATE June 1999
Stephen has returned to the P.G.A tour this past weekend playing in the Kemper open though he does seem to be a bit on the rusty side he still in fact did make the cut .Stephen has a one year visa in his hand so it looks like he will play several events and I'm sure his play will improve as he progresses,another reason for celebration is that on May 25 his wife Jodi gave birth to their second son, mother and child both doing well.Stay tuned thanks.
