On 3 August 2004, Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers killed 2 members of an indigenous Buddhist family in Dhandachara village of Bhushanchara in Barkal. At night at around 11 pm the Muslim settlers attacked Mr. Barun Kumar Chakma (33) and his family members with swords and spears. Mr. Barun Kumar Chakma died on the spot and his wife Ms. Subarna Chakma (28) and 11 months old son Kampan Chakma were seriously injured. Next day on 4 August Ms. Subarna died from her injuries. Kampan Chakma got serious injuries at his right leg.
Bangladesh army torture indigenous Chakma Buddhists in Baghaichari
On 14 July 1985, a combined force of Bangladesh Army of 7th Bengal Regiment from Tintilla Army Camp and BDR led by an Army Lieutenant carried out a military operation at Ugalchari Mukh in Baghaichari, Rangamati district. The aim of the operation was to drive out the indigenous people from their homeland. Bangladesh army and BDR subjected many indigenous people to inhuman physical torture and plundered their properties. The victims are:
Pradeep Chandra Chakma (35), son of Man Chandra Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was severely beaten. His valuable properties were robbed and his house was set on fire.
Dulal Kanti Chakma (24), son of Subhash Chandra Chakma. He was mercilessly beaten. Army and BDR robbed a bullock, a goat and 4 fowls from him.
Avatar Chakma (23), son of Kishto Lal Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Bangladesh army and BDR robbed his wife's gold ornaments worth Tk.10,000.00 (Ten thousand taka).
Dhanaban Chakma (24), son of Lalit Chandra Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Bangladesh army and BDR forced him to give Tk. 2000.00 (Two thousand taka) and 40 Kilos of rice.
Ajit Kumar Chakma (21), son of Dhirendra Lal Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was beaten till he became senseless.
Samiran Chakma (23), son of Deboratna Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Bangladesh army and BDR robbed his automatic wrist watch worth Tk. 1600.00 (One thousand six hundred taka).
Amrita Lal Chakma (18), son of Deboratna Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was beaten and hung upside down.
Mamata Ranjan Chakma (20), son of Kalachan Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was similarly beaten and tortured.
Priya Darshi Chakma (27), son of Satish Sen Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Army and BDR robbed his tape player/recorder worth Tk. 4,500.00 (Four thousand and five hundred taka).
Sneha Kumar Chakma (30), son of Man Chandra Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Army and BDR robbed 6 fowls and 60 Kilos of rice from him.
Dhan Vijay Chakma (24), son of Kamal Dhan Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Army and BDR serverely tortured him.
Rana Ranjit Chakma (26), son of Binode Bihari Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Bangladesh army robbed 2 goats from him.
Britya Chakma (20), son of Ananda Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Bangladesh army severely beat him till he became senseless.
Dayal Chandra Chakma (25), son of Kalachan Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Bangladesh army robbed Tk. 1000.00 (0ne thousand taka) from him and threatened him with life if he would not pay the amount to them.
Shantiswar Chakma (38), son of Kandara Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Soldiers robbed all his valuable properties and took away a pair of bullocks which were his only means for ploughing lands.
Sunil Chakma (12), son of Navin Sen Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was beaten mercilessly infront of his parents who were forced to remain mute spectators. While the victim was being beaten, the soldiers warned the parents that next time they would shoot their sons so that no bloody Chakma could become a Shanti Bahini in future.
Chakya Chakma (25), of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was severely beaten, kicked to the ground and was abused filthy language.
Bimal Chandra Chakma (18), son of Dhamma Dhar Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. His house was plundered and two goats were taken away by force.
Ranga Moy Chakma (26), son of Ratna Sen Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Hew was inhumanly beaten and tortured.
Gyana Moy Chakma (20), son of Ratna Sen Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Hew was also beaten like his elder brother.
Bimalya Chakma (24), son of Hanu Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was beaten till he lost consciousness.
Jatindra Chakma (32), son of Abhimanya Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. Bangladesh army ransacked his house and robbed gold ornaments worth Tk. 12,000.00 (Twelve thousand taka).
Dhirendra Lal Karbari (67), son of late Jagat Chandra Karbari of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was beaten and tortured.
Milan Chandra Chakma (55), son of Akshay Moni Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was beaten and compelled to pay Tk. 1000.00 (One thousand taka) to the army personnel.
Subash Chandra Chakma (49), son of late Jagat Chandra Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was beaten till he became senseless.
Navin Sen Chakma (46), son of Umesh Chandra Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. The soldiers took away a pair of bullocks from him by force.
Pratap Chandra Chakma (37), son of Joy Kumar Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. His house was robbed and burnt to ashes.
Naba Kishor Chakma (52), son of Habedya Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was also a victim of physical torture.
Narendra Chakma (31), son of Naba Kishor Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was severely beaten and a sum of Tk. 1500.00 (Fifteen hundred taka) was extorted from him.
Tangbali Chakma (42), son of Umesh Chandra Chakma of Ugalchari Mukh, Baghaichari. He was inhumanly beaten.
