Bangladesh army set fire on Buddhist temple in RangamatiOn 18 February 1986, Bangladesh Army of 29 East Bengal Regiment from Madhya Para army camp at Bandnuk Bhanga led by Major A. Kalam set fire on a Buddhist temple (Tripurachara Bana Vihar) at Tripurachara in Rangamati. Bangladesh army motivated by Islamic fanaticism and religious hatred set fire on the Buddhist temple to humiliate the non-Muslims living in Bangladesh. This incident has created a sentiment of grief and sorrow among the indigenous Buddhist population in Chittagong Hill Tracts. On 27 February 1986, when Mr. Hridoy Ranjan Chakma, a member of the Union Council went to protest and complain at the army camp about this barbaric act, he was beaten mercilessly at the camp by a Subedar (a non-commissioned officer). While he was being beaten, Bangladesh army told him- We want Islam, we do not want your Buddhist temple in Bangladesh. We want Islam not only in CHT, we want Islam in the whole world.
