On 22 September 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Rangamati. When the indigenous people counter attacked in self defence Bangladesh army took side with the Muslim settlers. 76 indigenous people were injured and numerous indigenous properties were destroyed.

Dr. Shusovon Dewan is an indigenous physician in Rangamati. Muslim settlers mercilessly beat him when they found him in the street.


Bangladesh army torture indigenous people in Naniachar

On June 29, 1986, an army unit from the army camp at Naniachar, summoned a meeting at the Primary School of Kattaltali which was attended by indigenous elites of the locality.

In the meeting, the army authorities bitterly criticised the movement for right of self-determination in the CHT and warned the people not to support the movement and to refrain from giving donations to the Shanti Bahini.

After the meeting was over, six persons were arrested and taken to the army camp at Naniachar for interrogation and torture. Names of the arrested persons are given below:

  1. Mukunda Lal Chakma, 55 yrs, son of Kalikinkar Chakma, of Bhangamura, P.S. Naniachar, was taken to the army camp at Naniachar after being arrested. At the camp he was tortured during interrogation. Later, he was released after extorting Taka 10,000 from him.
  2. Smritimoy Dewan, 45 yrs, son of Late Madhav Chandra Dewan, of Kattaltali, P.S. Naniachar, was also taken to the army camp at Naniachar after being arrested and was tortured during interrogation. He was released after extorting Taka 12,000 from him.
  3. Amar Kanti Dewan, 35 yrs, son of Sahasra Dewan, address as above, was also arrested and taken to the army camp at Naniachar where he was subjected to inhuman torture during interrogation. Later he was sent to Rangamati for further torture and interrogation by the DGFI (Directorate General or Forces Intelligence). His where about are not given to his relations by the army authorities.
  4. Nirmalendu Khisa, 40 yrs, son of Indra Ranjan Khisa, address as above, was also arrested and taken to the army camp at Naniachar and tortured. He was sent to Rangamati for further torture and interrogation by the DGFI. His relations have not been able to trace him out as the army authorities refuse to give any information about him.
  5. Bhuban Chandra Chakma, 50 yrs, son of Dhamma Charan Chakma, of Kattaltali Naniachar, was also taken to the army camp at Naniachar after being arrested. He was tortured and interrogated at the Naniachar camp and from there he was sent to Rangamati for further torture and interrogation by the DGFI. He was released after he agreed to supply them with information about the JSS and its armed wing the Shanti Bahini.
  6. Pravin Chandra Chakma, 40 yrs, son of Kulesh Dhon Chakma, address as above, was also arrested and taken to the army camp at Naniachar where he was subjected to inhuman torture during interrogation. He was sent to Rangamati for further torture and interrogation by the DGFI. His relations have not been able to contact him as the DGFI authorities deny that he is being kept by them.
