On 9 May 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers raped and killed an indigenous Buddhist girl Miss. Sujata Chakma (11) daughter of late Mr. Jyotish Chandra Chakma and Ms. Mongala Devi Chakma of Ultachari area of Atarakchara union under Longadu sub-district in Rangamati district. The victim was a student of year 4 of Ultachari Government Primary School. Muslim settlers killed the girl by mutilating on the neck with a sharp weapon.

Bangladesh army rape indigenous Chakma women in Merung

On July 6, 1986, soldiers of 41st EBR surrounded the Ghulchari village, Merung at 01:00 hours (BST) midnight. Only those persons who managed to flee from the round up, escaped army atrocities and torture. But the women and the young girls who could not escape, were tortured and raped.

The villagers who took shelter in the jungles near the village were indiscriminately fired upon by the soldiers at 05:00 hours in the morning.

Due to the intentional and indiscriminate army firing on the innocent, unarmed Chakma inhabitants, one boy was wounded. All the panic-stricken men and women were arrested and beaten on the spot and later taken to the army camp for torture.

After appeals made by Binanda Rakhal Chakma of Betchari, P.S. Merung, the army authorities released innocent people on July 7, 1986.

The names and addresses of the women and girls who were raped by the soldiers of the 41st EBR on July 6, 1986, and the boy wounded by army firing are given below:

1. Subhodhon Chakma, 8 yrs, son of Badichan Chakma, of Ghulchari, P.S. Merung, was wounded due to intentional indiscriminate army firing on the innocent, unarmed Chakma inhabitants.
2. Suryalata Chakma, wife of Jayanta Kumar Chakma, address as above, was raped.
3. Narambi Chakma, 17 yrs, address as above, was raped till bleeding.
4. Mrs. Virendra Kumar Chakma, address as above, was raped consecutively.
5. Mrs. Lalit Kumar Chakma, address as above, was also raped.
6. Mrs. Navin Sen Chakma, address as above, was raped.
7. Mrs. Padma Sen Chakma, address as above, was raped.
8. Rongomala Chakma, daughter of Boli Chakma, address as above, was raped till bleeding.
9. Kalabi Chakma, daughter of Nishimohan Chakma, address as above, was raped as above.
10. Kedama Chakma, wife of Kedabap Chakma, address as above, was raped.
11. Mrs. Nishi Kumar Chakma, address as above, was raped in front of her husband.
12. The cousin of Padma Sen Chakma, address as above, was gang raped.
13. Sister-in-law of Virendra Kumar Chakma, address as above, was raped till bleeding.
