On 26 August 2003; Bangladesh army in league with Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people in Mahalchari. Bangladesh army and Muslim settlers set fire on more than 370 indigenous Buddhist houses. An indigenous Chakma man and an indigenous Chakma infant (8 months) were killed. More than 1000 indigenous Buddhist people were rendered homeless. Lemucharipara Buddhist Temple and Babupara Buddhist Temple were burnt down. Lord Buddha's images were demolished. Bangladesh army and Muslim settlers raped 10 indigenous Chakma women.
Bangladesh army torture indigenous people in Mahalchari
On 28 Dec. 1988, Bangladesh army of 1 EBR from the Zonal HQ at Mahalchari raided indigenous Buddhist village Kerengyanal in Mahalchari, Khagrachari district.
During the raid, Bangladesh army encircled the whole village, conducted house to house search, arrested innocent persons with false charges of giving food and shelter to the Shanti Bdhini. Bangladesh army took the arrested persons to the army Zonal HQ at Mahalchari. Bangladesh army interrogated and tortured them with electrocution.
Among the 6 arrested persons 5 were released on 29 Dec. 1988. The victims are:
Mr. Amitabha Khisa (50), son of Mr. Kaliratan Khisa of
Kerengyanal, Mahalchari. He was still detained while this report was being prepared.
Mr. Nihar Bindu Chakma (28), son of Mr. Manik Chandra Chakma, address as above. He was released on 29 Dec. 1988 after inhuman torture.
Mr. Pulak Bihari Chakma (30), son of Mr. Ram Krishna Chakma, address as above. Tortured and released as above.
Mr. Sashi Mohan Chakma (35), son of Mr. Rajani Chakma,
address as above. Tortured and released as above.
Mr. Bijoy Giri Chakma (25), son of Kala Uda Chakma,
address as above. Tortured and released on 29 Dec. 1988.
Mr. Kaladhan Chakma (24), son of Mr. Chamya Chakma, address as above. Tortured and released as above.
