On 26 August 2003; Bangladesh army in league with Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people in Mahalchari. Bangladesh army and Muslim settlers set fire on more than 370 indigenous Buddhist houses. An indigenous Chakma man and an indigenous Chakma infant (8 months) were killed. More than 1000 indigenous Buddhist people were rendered homeless. Lemucharipara Buddhist Temple and Babupara Buddhist Temple were burnt down. Lord Buddha's images were demolished. Bangladesh army and Muslim settlers raped 10 indigenous Chakma women.

Bangladesh army desecrates a Buddhist temple in Rangamati

On 24 June 1989, Bangladesh army from Karikhyong Army Camp led by Major Shafat carried out a military operation against the indigenous Buddhist inhabitants of Kharikhyong in Rangamati. During the operation, Bangladesh army desecrated a Buddha Vihara and slaughtered a cow at the Vihara. Bangladesh army beat and tortured indigenous Buddhist people. The victims and affected Vihara are:

1. Hangal Uday Buddha Vihara situated at Kharikhyong, 59 Banduk Bhanga Mouza, Rangamati. Bangladesh army broke the image of Lord Buddha. Bangladesh army destroyed properties of the temple.
2. Mr. Sanjib Chandra Chakma, 55 yrs, of Kharikhyong, 59 Banduk Bhanga Mouza, Rangamati. His house hold properties were destroyed.
3. Mr. Ashwini Kumar Chakma, 50 yrs, son of Mr. Kalendra Chakma, address as above. Bangladesh army forced him to give them a bullock worth Tk. 4000.00 free of charge for slaughter.
4. Mr. Kalachan Chakma, 60 yrs, son of Mr. Bimal Chandra Chakma, address as above. BD army robbed valuable properties from his house.
5. Mr. Pushpa Nath Chakma, 40 yrs, son of Mr. Pratap Chandra Chakma, address as above.
6. Mr. Chandak Chakma, 46 yrs, son of Mr. Pratap Chandra Chakma, address as above.
7. Mr. Lalit Moni Chakma, 47 yrs, son of Mr. Sarat Chandra Chakma, address as above.
8. Mr. Samiran Chakma, 42 yrs, address as above. All his house hold properties were destroyed by the army personnel.
