Bangladesh army torture indigenous people in Rangamati

On 23 Sept l994, Bangladesh army from Maksudtilla camp under Ghagra Military Zone was patrolling Bajechara village in Rangamati.

Bangladesh army halted at the house of Mr. Anib Chakma to take rest. At that time Mr. Anib Chakma was away but his wife Mrs. Indu Rani Chakma and a young girl Miss Kala Sona Chakma were at home. One of the soldiers requested Mrs. Indu Rani Chakma for a hookah to smoke. She readily complied with his request. After finishing smoking, the soldier passed the hookah to the army commander. While courteously passing the hookah with both hands to the commander, the soldier accidently dropped his automatic weapon from his back as a result of which the loaded weapon went off injuring 2 of his colleagues.

To cover up the incident, Bangladesh army men faked up a story that the 2 soldiers were injured when the Shanti Bahini opened fire on them. On the pretext of the fabricated Shanti Bahini attack, Bangladesh army tortured 4 indigenous villagers including a boy and took 3 adult indigenous men to the army camp for further torture and detention. The indigenous victims are:

  1. Shyamal Kumar Chakma (ll) was tortured
  2. Mr. Futtun Chakma (29) was tortured and detained
  3. Mr. Shara Bindu Chakma (27) was tortured and detained
  4. Mr. Juddha Moni Chakma (22) was tortured and detained
