Secretary of Special Affairs visit Bengali settlements in CHT

On 4-6 Jan 1995, Mr. Fazlul Hasan Yusuf the Secretary of the Special Affairs Division under Prime Minister's Secretariat held 3 meetings at Khagrachari, Rangamati and Bandarban with the local Deputy Commissioner, Chairmans and Members of the local District Councils and other Officers. Mr Yusuf informed them of the Bangladesh Government's plan for further economic "development" in the area.

As part of his visit, Mr. Yusuf went to Shantilla Muslim settlement in Dighinala, Khagrachari to see the rehabilitation of new Muslim settlers for himself. His visit confirms that Bangladesh Government is still financing the Muslim settlement programme in the name of economic development in the CHT.

Mr. Yusuf also visited several other Muslim settlements and promised his coreligionists all sorts of help. Perhaps, it is worth mentioning that he did not ask the Muslim settlers to vacate the indigenous villages and agricultural lands nor did he go to see the plight of indigenous refugees repatriated from India.

Repatriated indigenous refugees have not yet got back their ancestral villages and farm lands and also other benefits as promised to them by the Bangladesh Government at the time of their repatriation.
