Bangladesh army backed Indian militants attack indigenous people in Sajek

Bangladesh Government have set up a base for the Zoram Revolutionary Army (ZRA), an armed militant group from the Indian state of Mizoram near the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) camp at Old Lankar in the Sajek valley.

On July 10, 1995 at the behest of the BDR commander, the ZRA militants attacked Amtala Bazaar adjacent to Old Lankar village and robbed the properties of only Chakma Buddhists and not of Pankhos. The main aim of this attack was to divide the indigenous people.

On 12 July 1995, Maj. Gen. Azizur Rahman visited by helicopter Ruiluei Border Post and then the BDR Camp at Old Lankar to address a public meeting. On his arrival, the local Pankhos and Chakmas combinedly demonstrated before him carrying placards with slogans such as‑

  1. "We condemn the Amtala Bazaar occurrence of 10 July, 1995"
  2. "Expel the ZRA militants from the area"
  3. "Stop help to Foreign Armed Groups" and so forth

They also accused him for the Amtala Bazaar looting and harbouring foreign armed groups in the CHT and attempting to destroy peace in the area. Bangladesh army time and again used foreign armed groups from India and Burma against the Shanti Bahini and indigenous people of CHT.
