Bengali settlers attempt to kidnap an indigenous girl in DighinalaOn 11 October 1995, a group of Muslim settlers attacked the house of Mr. Chandra Kumar Chakma of Aparup Headman Para in Dighinala, Khagrachari district. Muslim settlers attempted to abduct his granddaughter Miss. Ringu Chakma (15). At the time of her abduction, Ringu Chakma cried out loudly to alarm her neibours. Alarmed by her cry, the indigenous Buddhist villagers rushed to her rescue and released her from the grip of the Muslim settlers. The rescuers were able to identify some of the Muslim settlers-
Mr. Chandra Kumar Chakma lodged a case at the Merung Police against the Muslim settler following day. As part of the public relations exercise Bangladesh Police arrested only i) Mohammad Alam, ii) Mohammad Sukkur Ali and iii) another Muslim settler but released them immediately after they submitted swear notes that they would not do it again. Bangladesh Police refusal to take adequate actions against the Muslim settlers prompted the Dighinala branch of HWF (Hill Women Federation) to stage a protest demonstration in Dighinala town on October 16, 1995. HWF presented the local Thana Nirbahi Officer (TNO = Thana Administrative Officer) with a memorandum demanding the arrest and trial of the Muslim settlers responsible for abduction. Needless to say, the TNO did not bring the culprits to justice indicating that the Bangladesh army had ordered the Muslim settlers to kidnap Miss. Ringu Chakma in order to rape her and then to forcibly convert her to Islam. Sources:PCJSS(Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti)comments powered by Disqus |
