Bengali settlers attack Buddhist funeral in Khagrachari

On 25 January 2014 at about 11:30 am, a group of Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people when funeral ceremony of Sabita Chakma was going on in Kamalchari area of Khagrachari district. Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers hit Panekya Chakma (32) and Ananda Lal Chakma (45) of Kamalchari with sticks and machete. Panekay Chakma was admitted to Khagrachari General Hospital with serious injuries in his head and other parts of the body.

On that day Muslim settlers of Bhuachari cluster village staged a human chain at Khagrachari city in response to the case filed against the Muslim settlers involved with the rape and murder of Sabita Chakma. While they were passing by the village of Sabita Chakma they chanted offensive slogans against the indigenous peoples. At some point Muslim settlers hurled stones at two Chakma girls of that village. Learning of the incident, the indigenous villagers who were at the funeral ceremony obstructed the Muslim settlers. As a result, Muslim settlers were forced to retreat and went towards the cremation ground of Kamalchari. On their way they found Panekya Chakma and Ananda Lal Chakma and cracked down over them with sharp weapons. At some point a member of Ansar (Islamic Guard) named Rasel was also seen to take part in the attack. Later the indigenous villagers managed to rescue the victims with serious injury.
