On 22 September 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Rangamati. When the indigenous people counter attacked in self defence Bangladesh army took side with the Muslim settlers. 76 indigenous people were injured and numerous indigenous properties were destroyed.

The settlers are attacking South Kalindipur area on 22nd September.


Bengali settlers attack Buddhist temple and village in Khagrachari

On 26 February 2014 at around 8:00 am, hundreds of Muslims settlers from Bhuachari cluster village attacked the indigenous villagers of Betchari of Kamalchari Union of Khagrachari with the excuse that a 12 year-old Muslim kid was missing since the day before. In this attack, Muslim settlers destroyed the images of Buddha, furniture and loudspeaker of a Buddhist temple named “Chaitya Adarsha Bouddha Vihara.” Indigenous villagers of Betchari came to know about this attack after a littler while and resisted vehemently this attack. As a result, clashes took place between both parties, and at least 5 Muslims settlers and 3 indigenous Buddhist persons were injured. 2 injured Muslim settlers were identified as Alam and Mintu. 2 injured indigenous Buddhist villagers were identified as:

  1. Bishwajit Chakma (29), son of Bilas Chandra Chakma
  2. Sukhamoy Chakma (30), son of Anil Kumar Chakma

Besides, on the same day at around 11:00 am, in a separate incident the Muslim settlers of Bhuachari village attacked 3 indigenous villagers, who sustained serious injury. The victims are:

  1. Biplob Chakma (30), son of Tara Chandra Chakma
  2. Rombapudi Chakma (60), wife of Tara Chandra Chakma
  3. Mamuni Chakma (18), daughter of Hekkala Chakma

Following these incidents, according to the decisions of a ‘law and order’ meeting, Khagrachari District Administration imposed section 144 in the Kamalchari Union area from 26 February to 28 February 2014.

Mr. Ushatan Talukdar, Member of Parliament (MP) from Rangamati constituency, demanded actions against the killers of Sabita Chakma during a parliament session on 26 February 2014. He stood up to speak on a point of order in the National Parliament and expressed his concern over the killing of Sabita Chakma and communal attack against indigenous people in Khagrachari. He demanded judicial inquiry to the incident and urged the Speaker of the Parliament to send a parliamentary team for on-site inquiry.
