On 22 September 2012 Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked indigenous Buddhist people in Rangamati. When the indigenous people counter attacked in self defence Bangladesh army took side with the Muslim settlers. 76 indigenous people were injured and numerous indigenous properties were destroyed.

Dr. Shusovon Dewan is an indigenous physician in Rangamati. Muslim settlers mercilessly beat him when they found him in the street.


Bangladesh army arrests 6 indigenous Chakma Buddhists in Kudukchari

On 5 July 2015, Bangladesh army arrested an indigenous Buddhist shopkeeper and 5 villagers at Kudukcahri in Rangamati after the soldiers had found 26 rounds of live bullets they themselves had planted in the shop.

At around 10: 30 a.m. a group of army personnel led by Major Raqib, commander of Kudukchari army camp went to the shop of Manob Jyoti Chakma at Half bazaar near Kudukchari bazar and put a packet on the floor under a bench. The shop was crowded with people as it was a market day. No one suspected Bangladesh army of any ill motive, or design.

Then Bangladesh army searched the shop and found the bullets inside the packet they had planted. The soldiers then arrested Manob Jyoti Chakma (30) son of late Chunni Lal Chakma, the owner of the shop, and seven others present at his shop. They are:

  1. Binimoy Chakma (28) son of Shanti Ranjan Chakma from village Chongrachari, Kudukchari
  2. Clinton Chakma (28) son of Bishwa Moni Chakma
  3. Sona Raj Chakma (22) son of Ananda Lal Chakma
  4. Intu Chakma (22) son of Nironjeeb Chakma
  5. Mintu Chakma (17) son of Nironjeeb Chakma

They all came from Chongrachari to buy daily necessities from bazaar. They army took all of them to Kudukchari camp and later released all but Manob Jyoti Chakma, the shopkeeper, and Binimoy Chakma.
