Literature Major and Creative Writing Minor Programs

THE LITERATURE MAJOR PROGRAM

The Bachelor Of Arts major in Literature Program is an answer to De La Salle University's felt need of enriching its curricula with studies in the humanities. The University believes that the creation of a whole Christian person necessitates a firm foundation in major aspects of literary scholarship---literary history, literary research, and literary writing.

Thus, the Literature Program aims to establish De La Salle University as a center for literary studies and creative writing imbued with a sense of social responsibility. It commits itself to the development, promotion, and teaching of subjects that will not only shape the students' humanistic spirit but also instill in them a consciousness of their national literary heritage.

Since its inception, the Literature Program has produced graduates who have made and are still making significant contributions to Philippine arts and letters, and many of its graduates pursue masteral and doctoral degrees at the University Graduate School.

These major untis consist of 18 units of core courses (including undergraduate thesis) plus 21 units of specialized literature subjects.

THE CREATIVE WRITING MINOR PROGRAM

The Program basically seeks to develop the literary talents of students who feel they have the potential to become good writers, yet lack the opportunities to practice their skills. Unlike the study of literature, which is primarily theoretical and author-centered, the Minor in Creative Writing affords students the chance to do literary writing of their own. Furthermore, the Program will be a venue for students to engage in writing as an artistic and imaginative activity, separate from the writing they pursue in their chosen academic fields.

Through interaction with professional writers, teachers of literature, and other students with whom they share a common pursuit, it is expected that students enrolled in the Program will fully utilize and appreciate their new knowledge of writing, which may later provide an alternative in terms of career or profession.
