The Flaming Lips, Reading Festival, 30th August 1999

With The Offspring playing the main stage only a slingshot away, The Flaming Lips needed to be pretty special to compete, and happily they didn't disappoint.

There's a fine line between genius and madness and tonight it turned into a tightrope with singer Wayne Coyne leading The Lips through a pleasing balancing act. Singing with a face covered in (costume) blood while visual interpretations of the music were projected onto a huge screen behind, Coyne looked like a bizarre combination of a horror movie extra and a bearded vagrant, but the music was powerful enough to keep the crowds glued.

Old favourites She Don't Use Jelly and When You Smile were mixed with brand new tracks such as latest single Race For The Prize, with glove puppets, glitter and gongs galore. If more bands could make their audiences feel this valued then the world would be a happier place.

The Flaming Lips left to an ovation and a marquee full of new friends. Insanity and pure talent have truly collided under the cunning guise of this band.

Find them, before they find you.
