The future for Mr.Baker could be very bright; their debut seven-inch on Bluedog Records has been championed by the music press and with more projects in the pipeline, a fanbase holds its breath. Roofdog converses with Gary Prosser on music, life, baking bread and wearing skin-tight space suits...
RD: Apart from writing songs with Mr.Baker, what have you been up to recently? GP:Writing more songs with Mr Baker - working on a beautiful thing. Drinking booze and baking bread (not true). RD:Who is in the band? GP: James Sandom (bass player & co-pilot) and Mark Barratt (guitarist).... We also have two live members....all confidential tho'. RD:What was the inspiration behind your first release, the song "Mr.Baker"? It's a very moving song. Is it about anyone in particular? GP:It's more about a state of mind than a particular individual... RD:That self-titled debut 7" was very well received. What future Mr.Baker releases (including titles if possible) are in the pipeline, and how many Mr.Baker songs have been written? GP:Loads....working gems at present include "The Times" and "Talk all Night"; all will be revealed when we gig. RD:How would you say the sound differs between Mr.Baker and that of your last band, Ballroom? GP:Mr Baker's got wings.....totally timeless ones and lives in a different part of town from Ballroom. Different moods, different vibe and different strokes. RD:There have been a handful of select Mr.Baker Camden gigs mentioned recently.... How many have you been played, and are there any gigs planned outside London yet? GP:We haven't....all myths. One acoustic show at the 12-bar, to dip toes in water, just me, James & Mark. Massive success...but next time Mr Baker surface it'll be with electricity. Camden knows nothing, just a load of posters plastered in the Barfly. RD:It's also been rumoured that you've composed some music for a film. Could you tell us a little about that? GP:True...watch this space, a Channel 4 film will be using "Bionic" and some incidental music I've been involved in. RD:Who or what is entertaining you at the moment? (music, films, books, TV...) GP:The Flaming Lips, Shack, Lou Reed, Elton......TV, loads of escapism always, current fav's - Voyager. RD:There are rumours that whilst in Ballroom (right), you donned a skin-tight space alien suit for a laugh after a gig with Libido and Glitterbox in Leicester in April last year. What was that all about? And was it a nice suit? GP:Don't believe the hype, but it sounds rock & roll so say what ya' like! RD:And what is Mr.Bakers' gameplan for the next year?
GP:Finish the current batch of gems, gig, deal, singles, albums,
soundtracks....maybe not all this year.
