Geneva
Weather Underground
Nude
It's been a long time coming. For some, too long. But Geneva have finally
released the follow-up to 1997's critically acclaimed debut, Further,
laying to rest speculation that they had split, or couldn't think of any
more tunes. On the evidence of this album, it seems that the only thing
Geneva have been engrossed in is an intense process of self-analysis and
reinvention.
This isn't the jangly, lightweight Geneva of old, but a harder, modern
and contemporary band. Andrew Montgomery's voice is as angelic as ever.
Gone are the fast-paced indie-night warm up tracks like Into the Blue,
instead being replaced by such wonders as the 70's chorus of Killing
Stars and the sublime Cassie, borrowing more than a hint of the REM track
Be Mine.
The sound is still Geneva's own; Museum Mile and next single If you Have
to Go are notably familiar and Montgomery's voice will always be
instantly recognisable. Geneva may never again write a song as beautiful
as Tranquilizer, but their process of evolution has been more of a
benefit than a hazard. They're original and thought inspiring.
So get ready.
8/10 Karl Cremin.
