There's been a lot of interest lately in classic funk from Africa -- or, rather, African rare groove, the artists and sounds of which are even more obscure than the great Manu Dibango and Fela Kuti.
This month's feature pulls from that newfound African rare groove repertoire. It's by percussionist Sidiku Buari, known simply as Buari. His lone 1975 self-titled LP looks like RCA Records' quick attempt to cash in on the success of Atlantic Records' Manu Dibango and his Afro-funk hit "Soul Makossa." But this is a great cash-in with lots of hard grooves and rhythmic roots from Buari's native Ghana.
"Then Yebtheyet" (like the rest of the album) features Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums, Gordon Edwards on bass, Paul Griffin on keyboards, Jerry Friedman & Lou Hemsey on guitar, and of course Buari on percussion and vocals. I know you'll dig it.
