Lonely

By Karen

The night was cold. Willow was alone. She shivered as the breeze hit her nightgown and went straight through it to the skin underneath. Fighting the need to go in, she stared up at the full moon.

She knew it was supposed to be beautiful. It's light was a flashlight piercing the night world, covering everything in a romantic silver glow. And it did illuminate the night. The trees were sculptures of solid metal and the ground shimmered. Even from here the bird bath reflected her image in it's mirrored surface. A strange landscape of lonely beauty.

Willow leaned against her fragile railing and shivered again. She should be at Giles' house. Down in the bowels of his house sitting watch. It was what she always did. Be with Oz. Sitting with a tea cup in her hands and reading a book to the beast behind the curtesy towels.

Instead she was here. A prisoner of the night, trapped in the safety of her home. And Oz, he was a prisoner of the silvery moonlight. The danger was too much. The distance was too far. The excuses were not good enough. Willow was not where she was supposed to be. Her husband should not be alone. She should not be here under the careful guard of her best friend.

Buffy appeared at the door. Willow relinquished her seat on the fragile rail. The Slayer meant well, but her gentle reprimands were enough to drive a sane woman into Bellevue. Sliding into the house, Willow felt a kick low in her belly.

Willow thought about the special room being built in the basement of their new home. And about the baby jittering around just underneath the skin. She knew that a pregnant woman was a vampire's favorite snack and the trip was too dangerous for her and her daughter. But that didn't stop the resentment.

She promised herself and her baby that they would never go through this again. The room would be finished in time for the next moon. Her daughter would be born on the night of the new moon and the three of them would never be separated again. They would never be lonely.

The End.
