"Fushigi Yuugi", which, translated into English means "Mysterious Play", is the story of two best friends, named Miaka Yuuki and Yui Hongo, who visit the national library to study for their high school entrance exams. Once there, they find a mysterious book entitled "Four Gods of the Earth and Sky" in a room in the back of the library which is closed to the public. As it turns out, the story itself is an incantation, and when they read it out loud, it sucks them into a fictional world resembling ancient China. In this new world there are 4 rival countries, Konan, Kutou, Hokkan and Sailo, which are each protected by their own god. The gods can only be summoned by their Mikos (priestesses), which are girls who come from another world. When they are sucked into the world, they are almost instantly harassed by traffickers, but suddenly, a guy appears to save them. He has a Chinese character on his forehead, the sign of orge. Both of the girls take an instant liking to him. Money seems to be all he cares about, and when he finds that the girls have no money to give him in return for saving their lives, he walks away. Yui runs after him. All of a sudden, a red light appears, and Yui is sucked back into her world.
In order to return to her world, Miaka accepts the role of Suzaku No Miko, protector of Konan Country. To call upon Suzaku's powers she must gather the 7 Suzaku Seishi, the champions of Suzaku, each gifted with unique powers from the gods. Each Seishi is the embodiment of a constellation in a part of the sky. A twist of fate drives Yui to become Seiryuu No Miko, protector of Kutou Country and mortal rival of Suzaku No Miko. Over the love of Tamahome, a Suzaku Seishi- the guy who saved them both in the beginning, the two best friends gather their forces in a battle to the death.
