"The Apgar represents a composite of tests, which reflects the infant's health at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth. The score at 5 minutes is usually higher than the score at 1 minute. A score of 7 to 10 is considered normal. Below 7 indicates difficulty breathing. The rating is based on point system which gives a score of 0, 1, or 2 in each of five categories:


heart rate,
respiration,
muscle tone,
color, and
reflex irritability."
