Valkyries

Some Terran Starcraft players-- particularly newbies -- seem to often find it difficult to decide what type of air unit to build: Wraiths or Valkeries. I personally build Valkeries more often, here's why: A. I don't devalue wraiths in any way; they can be useful, especially upgraded with personal cloaking. But, they take a lot of minerals and quite a while to build as well. In addition, their weaponry is not as sophisticated as valkeries (for air combat), and against players who go straight to the arial assault phase of the game, valkeries will fare better. Furthermore, a smart opponent will alsways keep detectors handy to thwart any invisible wraith assaults. B. Conversely, Valkeries are one of the best anti-air devices in the game. They are fast, lithe, and lethal in groups. Like the protoss corsair, they make excellent overlord killers, and help destroy those nasty little protoss observers that prevent invisible attacks. In addition, massing valkeries can defend well against mass mutalisks. A mutalisk wave against a wraith wave will most often emerge triumphant for the zerg. C. But, unfortunately, valkeries cant to squat when it comes to ground assault. This is where an alternative to wraiths must be invented. I find this extremely difficult. Battle Cruisers aside (because they are so expensive and take long to make), I think that coupling goliaths with upgraded marines works marvelously. Give the goliaths a missle range upgrade and you should do fine. On an island map, this is a difficult tactic to execute. On islands, there is little else Terran can do except dropship marines and goliaths or get battlecruisers and have an explorer use defense matrix to boost them in battle. I am sure there are other tactics, but these are the ones that work for me.
