Animals at Alma Park Zoo

Leopard No More

Sometime in 2001, the elderly leopard, Pussy, passed away. The leopard was at least twenty years old and had been a landmark inhabitant of the zoo. I can remember seeing him when I was a child. His enclosure, a horrible example of old style cages, will hopefully be destroyed. The space is earmarked for a new monkey exhibit, moving the spider monkeys out of their equally awful cage.

Sunbear Retreat

Other landmark inhabitants of the zoo are the two elderly sunbears, Shar, the male, and Raya the female. Both animals are in their twenties and were retired to Alma Park from Taronga. Their enclosure is quite good with a pool, trees that they do climb and plantings.. They are the second pair to live in this enclosure as the zoos original bears have died.

Old Style Monkeys

This is the worst exhibit in the zoo that is still occupied. A row of steel and concrete cages for four species of monkeys. Not very high, not very large, dark and dingy. There is a lone male Crab Eating Macaque, a family group Rhesus Macaques, a pair of Spider Monkeys and a group of Sacred Baboons. They are a sorry looking lot. If I only had the money to give them a new home!

Deer on the Range

There is an enjoyable walk through the Fallow Deer Enclosure with a mixed breeding group.

Native Fauna Too

There is plenty of native fauna as well, ranging from parrots to cassowaries, wallabies to dingos. The list includes possums, koalas, lizards of various kinds, wombats and kangaroos.
