The Coffs Harbour Zoo is a small privately run zoo situated on the Mid Coast of New
South Wales, Australia. As a private zoo they are reliant upon entry fees to operate. They
receive non support rom the government. Set in lush forest surrounds, the zoo has attractive gardens and a large waterfowl lake, replete with ducks, swans and other native waterbirds. The site is still heavily forested and there is an enjoyable 5 minute bush walk between kangaroo paddocks. Most of the exhibits are attractively planted and are roomy for the animals involved. The first exhibit is The Australian rainforest Aviary - a mixture of native parrots, pigeons, bowerbirds and bush stone curlews. It si a walk through exhibit with lush plantings and is a pleasing size and height. What I didn't like were the small flight aviaries attached to one side. They housed breeding pairs of red tailed black cockatoos, Indian Ring Necked Parrots and various native australian parrots. They appeared cramped, dark and gloomy. |
Other animals on display include an innovative wombat enclosure, were you could
look in on their dens, so actually being able to see the wombats. (They are generally
nocturnal.). Dingos, kangaroos, and various wallabies. There are only three exotic species at the zoo, a breeding group of Cotton Top Tamarins, a Black Capped Capuchin and four Ostriches. We were told that they were in the process of aquiring a Burmese Python. The zoo runs talks including a Python Presentation (very good) a Koala Show and Rainforest birds. These are very informative talks and the keepers show that they do care for their animals. All up it is an attractive little zoo where an enjoyable couple of hours can be spent while passing through Coffs Harbour. |
