Beavers
03/25/02
We’ve had a busy and successful start to the New Year.
We kicked off the New Year with a “backwards night” that our Beavers clearly were in the mood for. They enjoyed starting the meeting with “The Closing” and closing the meeting with “The Opening” and playing games backwards and learning what their name spells backwards.
We also were able to get our Skating Night in during this very peculiar winter. We had to postpone the original December date as it was raining and it threatened to rain for our January date. Fortunately, it didn’t and we had a great skate with the Beavers enjoying hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies to top off the night.
We followed up with a “Magnet Night” and learned about magnets. The Beavers moved through four hands-on stations to learn and play with different aspects of magnets. We leaders learned that Beavers are very attracted to magnets!
We had a linking meeting with the Cubs and shared some learning about reptiles. Reptilia joined us for the evening and introduced us to a number of reptiles such as red-eared slider turtle, caiman, bearded dragon, beauty snake, and a boa constrictor. It was enjoyed by all (with the possible exception of Ringtail who is not a big fan of snakes).
Space, the final frontier… the Beavers were introduced to the vastness of our solar system and given a sense of its scale by Hawkeye. The Beavers had fun drawing a map of the solar system and learnt some fun facts about space.
Tic Tac spoke to us about the Indians that used to live around Baby Point. He regaled us with a story and we made an Indian toy. It was a fun evening that gave the Beavers an introduction to the native people that lived here long before we did.
The Beavers celebrated Baden Powell week with the rest of the 153rd Scout Group by attending the Family Banquet on February 22 and the Church Service at Humbercrest United Church (our very appreciated sponsor) on the 24th. These group activities give the Beavers a chance to see that they are part of a larger group and a sense of what they have to look forward to by continuing in the program (Cubs, Scouts, Venturers). We witnessed the awarding of a number of Six Star awards to Cubs and recognition of four Chief Scout Awards (an exceptional showing).Of course, there was the awarding of the Cub “Gabriel Award”. The Church Service provides the 153rd Scout Group a visible opportunity to show its appreciation to our Church sponsor. Thank you to all who attended.
After the reasonably content intense start to the year, we just held a Team Games night where we concentrated strictly on having fun and played games for an hour highlighted by ‘Capture the Flag’ and an indoor snowball fight (ask your Beaver!).
Well, that’s what we’ve been up to from the beginning of the year to March Break. We have a lot more fun planned for the coming months. We always welcome comments from Beavers and their parents as to what the Beavers like best and what they don’t like about the program. After all, the program exists for the kids and they are our only priority, so we always appreciate your suggestions.
We are very fortunate to have a thriving, vibrant Beaver colony which is also part of a larger successful Scouting Group (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Venturers), this reflects the efforts of a large volunteer group mainly made up of leaders and parents. We always welcome additional volunteers and we especially need Leaders to maintain the group. So, please, if you are interested or just want to know a little more about what is required to be a leader, just ask us.
Thank you!
