Daisy Lee Gunter was born on July 31, 1889 in Buckingham County Virginia. She was the daughter of Richard Bennett Gunter and Nora Lee Powell. Daisy was their third child.

Little is known of her childhood, but the house that she was born in is still standing. She grew up surrounded by a large family. The part of Buckingham County that she was raised in was nicknamed Branch Town, because most of her neighbors were members of the Branch family. Daisy's Grandmother was a Branch.
