Eastern Woodland Metis Nation Nova Scotia Newsletter
~~ Fall 2002 ~~
Well, here we are again, ready to start our Fall meetings.
For those of you who missed it ~ and miss it you did, you really missed a very good day for the signing of the Treaty between EWMNNS and OMAP. The Treaty was signed by Grand Chief Tim Parker and Chief / President Don Cadeau and was witnessed by Cecil O’Donnell M.L.A for Shelburne. It was stated at this meeting that EWMNNS is the ONLY Metis Organization to be recognized by OMAP for NS and the Atlantic Provinces. In other words, to be recognized by OMAP you have to be a member of EWMNNS.
We must always remember that a true leader is the servant of the people. The people are the boss. So the Grand Council wants you to know that the fight is for all our members who are in good standing with the Nation, and who are helping with the struggle for our recognition. It is not an easy fight but we don’t want to go down fighting, we want to Win the Battle and we will by standing TOGETHER!! We, as distinct people, need strong people, and we need to use this strength to help everyone...
While at the Treaty Festivities Mr. Cadeau presented Tim and Mary Lou Parker with the Order of the Sash for all their hard work, and Chief Captain of the Hunt, Roland Surette, was presented with an Honor Sash. Don Cadeau also presented the Nation with a Soapstone Peace-Pipe. Andre Belanger of HERO’S presented the Nation with a Bear figurine for our office.
A press release fax was sent down for us to read.
Here is a link to a copy of it:   Metis Sign Treaty With Ontario
Here are two acronyms, one for EWMNNS and the other for METIS:
Our Web-site will soon be up-dated, that is long overdue.
Our land has been surveyed and hopefully with the coming of Spring we will start to clear the land to begin our Cultural Center.
We have been told by many of our members that their cards are being accepted more and more and they are receiving some breaks. That’s good news. Our membership keeps growing. Membership dues are not coming in though. Remember the monies from the dues are all that your Circles have to go on until we can start receiving government grants. So help yourselves by helping your Nation’s Circles.
In this issue we thought it would be nice to start with a few recipes. Here is our first one. It’s good, we tried it.
From Mona’s Kitchen:
COFFEE CAKE
1/4 cup margarine
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 cup sour cream
Cream margarine and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add alternately with sour cream. Spread batter in greased 9x9 inch square pan. Bake at 375 degrees F for 40 - 45 minutes.
Lemon Sauce
2/3 cup lemon juice
½ cup sugar
Heat sugar and lemon juice on stove until small bubbles form. Thicken with a small amount of corn starch and water. Pour over warm cake after poking holes in cake with fork.
Anyone wishing to submit recipes, please do so. We will add them to our files.
