LEARNING!
"Learn from the skillful; he that teaches himself has a fool for a master."
Benjamin Franklin
Few of our children are aware of the role of school in their lives. School is generally hated by some of the pupils because it is the place where their freedom is restricted more than at home or outdoors. School is the place where the students are learning how to prepare themselves to adulthood; which they can't digest because they don't know if it is good or bad to be a grown up. It is at school that adults are taming those little creatures to know exactly what the society tolerates as behaviour and what society considers as awkward.
Unlike children, the parents expect a lot from school as to teach their little kids good manners and the virtue of respect. Besides this parents want school to be a spring of different branches of knowledge to make their children able to cope with the world that is constantly changing and waiting for no one. However school is a place where we build up our future step by step. It is beyond parents wishes and kids expectations. It is doomed to follow the stream of politics that is always predicting the future according to special rules that school can't correct or alter. Take for instance a government that wants to stay in power as long as possible. The first thing they care about is what everybody wants though they know before hand that satisfying all tastes is impossible. School suffers from this concept a lot. Education has never been what it should be like. It is usually victim of a lot of viewpoints that rarely look sane. Those who want school to be a paradise should take into account that this paradise is an earthly one only. Dreams are not allowed except if they can be converted into real.
RECAPITULATION
What is school after all? Is it what the parents want? Or Is it what the children want? Or Is it an election card in the hands of political parties? This is an unlimited stream of questions that no one could stop. There no time to check for answers because your questions also should take the stream as well!
PARENTS
Parents generally struggle in life to make their children the best, to educate them well and to sacrifice a lot of their personal urgent needs for the sake of their children's well-being. When they are asked about school, they take it for granted that it is like air and water impossible to live without. That's true; but to what extent? There are two sorts of parents. The ones who like their children to be intellectuals; and those who just want their children to be rich even without education. The question now is why do parents insist on sending their children to school? Is it to learn more new things to understand what is going on in the world around them? Or just to make them reach a certain degree of study allowing them to get a job? Both parties exist and each one has his own reasons and justifications. We won't discuss these perceptions now; however there should be a third party who claims both knowledge and wealth...
CHILDREN
These are the ones who are not expected to give a wise conception of the role of school in their lives. Some of them go to school just because everybody does. Some others are forced to go because their parents want them to do so. Some others won't meet anyone to play with in the playground because everybody is at school so they do the same. Generally speaking, children hate school. And there are many reasons for that. First because the classroom is a narrow boring place where they have to stay standstill. Second because the teacher who represent the parents is always telling them what to do and what not to do which represent a violation of their "personal freedom". Third because they consider school a waste of time and they try to shun it to do something else, "
There are a lot of graduates without jobs,so what school is for?" they say...
POLITICS
Education is a winner card in elections. So parties work hard to elaborate an educational system that appeals to everybody's needs and expectations. Which is something really fun. The governments always look upon school as a bare institution that "swallows" a lot of money before it "produces" a person that can fit for what they want him or her to fit. They no longer want school to "produce" philosophers or historians but technocrats and simple workers.Nevertheless school is not the right "factory" for producing people who can do dirty jobs. It's quite a tough issue.
Tell no one, the "public" school is going to be a vacant place for poor people to spend their holidays, that's in the best conditions.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Some people are waiting for their turn.. to turn right
Some others are waiting for their turn.. just to fight.
