21-22 Theologian Dr. Ted Peters to speak on the Evolution and Creation Controversy

The St. Thomas Center for Spiritual Education, in association with Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, is presenting two evenings with Dr. Ted Peters on April 21st and 22nd, 2006.

Dr. Peters is professor of Systematic Theology at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He is also a fellow at the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, co-editor of the journal Theology and Science and principal investigator for the NIH project on “Theological and Ethical Questions Raised by the Human Genome Project”.  Among numerous other publications, he has co-authored with Martinez Hazlett the acclaimed book Evolution from Creation to New Creation.

Dr. Peters will lecture on Friday April 21st at 7:00pm at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on the subject Evolution: Who is fighting with whom about what? On Saturday April 22nd at 7:00pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church he will participate with local religious and science leaders in a panel discussion on the subject The Impact of the Evolution Debate on Science Education: What is it? What should it be? What will it be?

Dr. Peters maintains that a religious commitment implies a commitment to the best science. He advocates that children of every religious tradition should be exposed to the best science, and that it is the obligation of the education system to provide a high quality science education with well-trained teachers. He maintains that no theological reason exists to justify the inferior teaching of science. Dr. Peters’ position is that Scientific Creationism and Intelligent Design, even if conceived for wholesome reasons by well intentioned people, do not represent the best science. His measure of the quality of science is its fertility. By ‘fertility’ he means the ability of a scientific theory to generate research projects that lead to new knowledge.

Once schools have committed to the teaching of evolutionary theory then consideration can be given to alternative models. Dr. Peters notes that a healthy curriculum provides room for the discussion of the cultural controversy that includes Scientific Creationism and Intelligent Design as well as Theistic Evolution.

In Dr. Peters’ view, the stakes are high. What is at stake is faith, faith in the God who has created our beautiful world and who promises still yet more magnificent natural beauty in the future. Our faith in God should not be reduced to its bare bones formulation by either the Creationists or the Intelligent Design advocates. Our faith is not dependent on either of these theories about evolution.

According to Dr. Peters, in today’s politically charged atmosphere one can be left with the impression that to be a faithful Christian one must be anti-Darwin. This slips easily into the impression that the Christian faith is anti-science. If our young people inherit this point of view, it will be devastating for their futures.

The study of God’s creation through the microscope and the telescope is itself a divine calling, a vocation. Every generation needs a select group of young people to cultivate their natural curiosity in the direction of systematic research into the workings of nature. The whole of society benefits from the few who give their careers to science. It is good to include faithful Christian professionals among this select few.

St. Thomas and Our Lady of the Snows look forward to presentations and discussions that are diverse, frank and respectful and promise to stretch the minds of those who attend. Both the Friday and Saturday evening lectures are free and open to the public. Donations at the door will be gratefully received and will help to bring future speakers to the valley. For more information, please contact Susan Springer at St. Thomas Church, 726-5349 x24 or susanspringer@cox-internet.com

July 29 - August 6

On the Trail of the Da Vinci Code Tour

The Vancouver travel company, Sacred Earth Journeys, is offering a guided tour of the most important locations in The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown's best-selling thriller.

A movie version of The Da Vinci Code, starring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou, and directed by Ron Howard,
is scheduled to be released in May 2006 by Columbia Pictures/Sony Entertainment. This tour is an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu through three of Europe's magnificent capitol cities.

In Paris, the group will explore the Louvre museum, with two of Leonardo da Vinci's greatest works, the Mona Lisa and the Madonna of the Rocks. In St. Sulpice Church, they will see the cryptic Rose Line, used by Brown's fictional albino assassin-monk.

Sites in London include Temple Church, consecrated in 1185 and one of the most famous centres of the Knights Templar and the Priory of Sion in the UK. In Westminster Abbey, the group will visit Poet's Corner, Sir Isaac Newton's Tomb and the Chapter House, where Langdon and Neveu discovered the identity of "the Teacher."

The tour, like the book, concludes at one of the most mysterious places in Scotland, Rosslyn Chapel, near Edinburgh, where the secret of the Holy Grail was revealed.

Tour leader, Mark Amaru Pinkham, is an authority on the history of the Knights Templar and the mysteries of Rosslyn Chapel. The author of Guardians of the Holy Grail and The Truth Behind the Christ Myth, Pinkham will share cutting-edge information about secrets of the Holy Grail and the bloodline of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Sacred Earth Journeys recently won the "Inspiration Entrepreneur of the Year" award for the second consecutive year, presented by the BC Urban Entrepreneurial Development Association.

21-25 Dances Of Universal Peace
Canyonlands National Park, Needles District
September 21 - 25, 2006, Thursday - Monday

It is time once again for Beloveds to gather to dance in the Cave, to camp
in the beauty, to rest in the stillness, to create community with friends
and family, to eat together, to explore the Park and surrounding areas, and
to find our place in the circle: Dances will be led by Bernie Heideman and
Sky, with other Dance leaders and musicians, cooks will prepare delicious
potluck dishes, temple keepers will care for the Cave, butterfly herders
will shuttle dancers, and all Beloveds bring their hearts to share.

Opening circle and Dances are Thursday at 7 p.m., in the Split Top Cave.
Closing circle is Sunday afternoon. We will Dance Sunday evening, and camp
does not officially break until Monday morning. Camping will be in the
Squaw Flats Group site in the Park. The Split Top Cave site is reserved for
families with small children on a first come basis. We have an agreement
with the Park Service that we will not use individual sites in the Park
during the weekend. Motels in Monticello are 50 miles away if camping is not
your preference.

We are limiting the retreat to 60 dancers for the weekend and expect to be
full, so we suggest you register as soon as you are sure you want to come.
Sky has a packet of information that she can send to anyone who wants more
information before they register (this same information is sent to
registrants.)

Children under 7 are free; older children are negotiable at a discount rate.
We will joyfully accommodate children if we know they are coming. No pets,
please. Alas, because of camping limitations and Park regulations limiting
the size of our gathering, we are absolutely not able to accommodate
walk-ins.

The cost for the retreat is a sliding scale, $85 - $130, as you can afford.
Come join the circle! Alhumdulilah!

To Register: Email Sky to get the Policy Statement to agree to (see email
address below).
Mail your registration money to Dances c/o Sky ? PO Box 1266 ?
Durango CO 81302
