IN BANGLADESH: COLD VICTIMS NEEDS SYMPATHY

Northern Bangladesh is suffering its lowest temperature around four degree Celsius (4oC). This is the coldest and traumatic winter in more than 50 years in Bangladesh. Cold weather sweeping has killed at least 121 people in two weeks, mostly in the northern districts of the country. At least 34 people died in Nilphamari, 20 in Panchagarh, 18 in Kurigram, 16 each in Dinajpur and Thakurgaon, 10 in Gaibandha and 07 in Rangpur- according to a local official. The died are mostly poor/ homeless old and children. The sun was not visible for days together as it was covered with fog all day long. "Many more may die as the weather forecast says the cold spell will persist for a few more days," one official in Panchagarh told Reuters. So the people are facing the worst natural havoc this winter. Poor people are simply struggling for survival. The bone-biting cold wave has continued to sweep all over the northern region of the country paralyzing normal life. Incidence of winter related diseases such as asthma, pneumonia, common cold bronchitis etc. have increased due to cold wave. The government, private organizations and voluntary organizations (NGOs) distributing rugs, sweaters and cold jackets among the poor in the north. But more clothes and shelter were needed, local official told reporters on Tuesday. In an inter-ministerial meeting, the government on 8th Jan, 1998 urged private and voluntary organizations and NGOs to come forward and to help the cold-hit distressed people with warm cloths and shelters.

The honorable Citizens of Kumamoto,

Thank you very very much for your kind contribution to the activities of our Organization - Enviroprotection & Human Development (EPHD) which include helping the poorest of the poor with all possible means. This year, in our Country, we have had one of the coldest winter for many years, the temperature coming down bellow 6degree celsius in many places at night. Many poor people died of the cold shock. The Government of Bangladesh took all measures to protect the people from cold with his limitation. Many non-governmental organizations also came forward with their help.

We are very happy that we also could participate in this exercise - but that time we got more support from the kind people of Kumamoto in respect of money and warm clothes. We ourselves also managed funds to buy and collect warm clothing. We are happy to let you know that our Volunteers distributed all these clothing. among the poor people by visiting them in the late evenings - to find the real needy, sleeping on the street/ footpath. We got much pleasure to share with you the joy we have seen in these people after getting a warm cloth at a time when they needed it most.

We do not evaluate your donation in terms of quantity of goods you have sent or we could buy, but we would like to consider it as a Good Gesture to humanity- a motto that our Organization is determined to contribute to.

We,very much hope that the linkage that has been established between the people of Kumamoto and our Organization (EPHD) through your donation, will grow stronger with time and we together will be able to serve the humanity at a larger scale in future.

With many thanks again for your kind cooperation.

Yours sincerely
