Chapter One...Instinct Meets Hanson

Jennifer Smith stared at her best friend, Kelsey Lewis. She hated her at that moment. Why did she always have to be so calm? Jennifer knew she was going to make the biggest idiot out of herself tomorrow night and it didn’t help Kelsey was acted as if it were just a routine gig. “WE’RE OPENING FOR HANSON, KELSEY!!! ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO ME? ZAC, THE GUY OF MY DREAMS, AND TAY, THE GUY OF YOURS, ARE GOING TO BE THERE WHEN WE GO TO THE SOUND CHECK, “Jennifer screamed in her face.

Kelsey just stared at her blankly. At this Jennifer burst out laughing. Somebody could cuss her out and Kelsey would just stare at them. At that moment, Katy Jally, the third and final member of Instinct walked out of the bathroom, brushing her hair. “Hey, guys, about the sound check tomorrow, I’ve got a date with Jonathan.”

Jennifer rolled her eyes. Katy rarely said a sentence that didn’t involve her boyfriend, Jonathan. They had met a week ago and had instant chemistry and were dating. Kelsey, who had expected this, grinned mischievously and said, “Punishment time!!! Hit a middle c.”

Katy groaned and began to wrack her brain for what a middle c was. She hated when Kelsey did this to her and Jennifer. Whenever they did something that interrupted in the bands’ plans, she made them hit a certain note. Katy supposed it was fair, though, since Kelsey was the silent leader who wrote the music and was always writing a new song.

Katy finally sang the right note and Kelsey made her repeat it ten times before she was allowed to continue brushing her hair. Jennifer sat down at her desk and asked, “How should I do my hair? I mean, half up, all down, all up, what? I mean, what does Zac like?” Kelsey grinned - she loved watching her friend spaz over some guy she had never met. While Kelsey herself was very excited about meeting Taylor, whom she had crush on but would never admit it, she thought Jennifer was being paranoid about it.

The group of girls spent the next few hours messing with each others’ hair and putting on make-up and trying on out-fits. Since they were at Jennifer’s house and Katy was right down the street, they decided to do their stuff. Kelsey, being the very very very organized person she was, had already decided what to wear and how to do her hair. Make up? Kelsey never wore it. She would rather wear her cherry chapstick than bright red lipstick.

When they were finally done and had decided what Jennifer should wear, how to do her hair, and what make up to wear, it was three pm. They had begun at one pm. The two hours were well spent, however. They had decided to put Jennifer’s hair half up in a small yellow clip Kelsey had. Kelsey had suggested she wear yellow since Zac was so fond of it and it made her stand out. Jennifer had agreed but she didn’t want too much yellow. Because of this, she pulled a yellow tank top over her head and borrowed Katy’s black jeans jacket. She wore her new black wide-leg jeans. To top (or rather bottom) it all off, she wore yellow Doc Martins - just like Zac.

Despite the fact she hated the shoes, when she looked in the mirror she had to admit she looked good. When they were finally done, they had to clean Jennifer’s room and hang up the millions of clothes they had thrown all over the place. Then they headed down to Katy’s.

Katy already had an idea of what she wanted to wear for her date with Jonathan the next night. She wanted to wear a blue dress, but she had ten million blue dresses!!! They examined all of them. They all agreed to one that was just barely too short and had a v-neck was exactly what she should wear. Kelsey began going through Katy’s closet trying to find a pair of shoes. Jennifer had sat Katy down in front of her vanity case and began messing with her hair. They agreed she should curl it to give her a more sophisticated look (her boyfriend was 16, after all).

“Here!” Kelsey said in triumph. She held up a pair of blue shoes. They dangled in her hands. They were two inch heels, with bold strips of material crossing the foot. Katy smiled and tried everything on. When they were finally done, although Katy didn’t believe them, Kelsey and Jennifer swore up and down that she looked at least 16.

For the next hour the girls went threw millions of drills, with Kelsey telling them what to do. Kelsey was the one who had done all of the research, so she told them what to do. They spent fifteen minutes with Kelsey hitting a note on her keyboard and Jennifer and Katy having to sing it and tell her what it was. Next, they began working on their songs. Kelsey would play and sing harmony with Jennifer and Katy.

When it seemed like they had just started, they heard a honk outside. They looked out the window and saw Kelsey’s mom. Kelsey frowned. She hated when she had leave and she was with her band.

Kelsey packed up her things with help from Jennifer and Katy and left. Her mom greeted her with, “So, you’re finally going to meet that Hanson boy, huh?” Kelsey blushed. Her mom knew how obsessed she was with Taylor Hanson. But she didn’t mind. She had at first, but Kelsey had quickly pointed out that should could just as easily be obsessed with Marilyn Manson. Her mom completely left her alone after that.

Kelsey went home and showered. She couldn’t believe tomorrow she was going to meet Hanson. They were opening and Kelsey was kind of worried the tens of hundreds of girls wouldn’t like them - they weren’t Hanson. But Kelsey smiled. She knew at least twenty guys who were going to withstand Hanson just to hear Instinct perform. She loved that. Tons of times Instinct had only opened for bands and Instinct’s fans had bought tickets just to hear Instinct perform.

That night she lay in bed thinking about Taylor. She knew she probably was going to be quieter than usual. She couldn’t help it. Just the thought of his blue eyes blew her away. She just hoped Jennifer didn’t make a complete idiot out of herself and the band tomorrow night. But if she knew Jennifer, she would and Kelsey would start cracking up. She thought of this, smiled, and went to sleep smiling.
