Eliminations Tournament - Cobourg, Ontario - July 31, August 1, 2 and 3
Saturday August 1st - 11am - Rutherflo 6 vs Woodstock 4 : Dave Waldie and Ronny Herriot led off the game with back to back walks. Craig Minifie grounds out for a fielder choice and moves Waldie to 3rd. Greg Newell comes up and gets a sac RBI fly to score Waldie. Rutherflo scores again in the 2nd inning when Randy Fife leads off with a single. Third baseman Rob Doncaster then lays down a beautiful bunt which moves Fife to second and himself safe at first. Chris Burkholder then comes up and grounds out to first, the first baseman then turns arounds and throws over the seconds baseman's to try and get Doncaster. Fife scores on the error by the Woodstock first baseman. In the top of the 4th inning Ross Rutherflord gets a solo homerun off Rutherflo pitcher Randy Fife for Woodstock.
Rutherflo also gets on the board in the 4th inning, it all started when Rob Doncaster getting a single. Chris Burkholder then hits a solid double which the centerfielder makes a great diving catch to knock down the ball, but when he gets up to throw it in, he bobbles the ball and allows Rob Doncaster to score all the way from first. Woodstock gets another run in the top of the 5th inning when Jason Broadhurst hits a solo homerun. Rutherflo comes right back again in the bottom of the inning with Steve Connelly leading off with a solo homerun. Craig Minifie also picks up a solo homerun later in the inning. Notes: Randy Fife pitched 6 complete innings for Rutherflo getting the victory. Byron Baraieski picks up the save in the 7th.
Saturday August 1st - 7pm - Cobourg 5 vs Rutherflo 4 : Rutherflo starts the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when Ron Herriot singles to left-field. Ron steals 2nd and Minifie hits a long fly ball to left-field to advance Ron to 3rd. Greg Newell then nailed a double to the fence which scores Herriot to give Rutherflo a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the 1st. Cobourg Heritage Habour scores 2 in the bottom of the 1st. Cobourg gets on the board again in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Scott Herriot (the brother of Rutherflo centerfielder Ron Herriot) pounds a 2-run homerun. Rutherflo comes back in the 6th inning with a run. Tom Jopling draws a walk. Craig Minifie then doubles and advances Jopling to 3rd. Greg Newell then gets a sac RBI fly to center-field to score Jopling. Rob Doncaster then comes up and drives in Minifie with a single to make the score 5-3 for Cobourg. Rutherflo gives it their best in the 7th inning when Billy Shannon and Randy Fife draw back to back walks with 1 out. Ron Herriot doubles to score Bill Shannon and make the score 5-4 for Cobourg. With Herroit on 3rd and Dave Waldie on 2nd, Craig Minifie strikes out to end the game for Rutherflo.Notes: Byron Baranieski takes the loss for Rutherflo. One of the major upsets at the tournament.
Sunday August 2 - 11am - Rutherflo 6 vs Alvinston 0 : Rutherflo begins the scoring in the 2nd inning . Randy Fife leads off with a walk. Chris Burkholder then hit a single. Evan Loucks hits a towering 3-run homerun to left field. Rutherflo keeps it going in the 3rd inning with Ron Herriot getting a walk and stealing 2nd. Craig Minifie singles home Herriot. Pitcher Randy Fife hits a 2-run homerun to end the scoring in the game. Notes: Randy Fife picks up the win with a 1 hitter for Rutherflo. Game ended after the 5th inning because of a 6-0 mercy.
Sunday August 2 - 7pm - Rutherflo 6 vs Balmoral 1 : Dave Waldie gets a single on the first pitch of the game. Herroit bunts over Waldie to 2nd and Minifie grounds out to get Waldie to 3rd. Greg Newell then singles home Waldie to give Rutherflo a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd inning Rob Doncaster leads off with a single for Colborne. Pitcher Byron Baraieski grounds to shortstop but the throw to the 1st baseman somehow gets by him and Doncaster scores. Rutherflo scores again in the 3rd inning , Ron Herriot starts it off with a single. Craig Minifie moves Ron over to 2nd with a ground out. Chris Burkholder nails a double up the middle into center-field to score Herriot. Rob Doncaster comes up and singles home Burkholder. Rutherflo adds some more insurance runs in the 7th inning when Dave Waldie leads off the inning with a double off the right-center-field fence. Waldie then steals 3rd on a passball. Craig Minifie then nails a 2-run homerun to straight away center-field. Notes: Byron Baranieski pitched well in 7 complete innings getting the win for Rutherflo.
Monday August 3 - Rutherflo 9 vs St.Mary's 4 (12 innings) : Dave Waldie leads off the game with a home-run. In the 2nd inning St.Mary's scores a run, tying the score at 1-1. Rutherflo came right back in the 3rd when #66 Rob Doncaster hits a double scoring two Rutherflo runners and taking the lead 3-1. The next inning (4th) St.Mary's ties it up. But Rutherflo took the game in the 12 inning by scoring 5 runs. Notes: Randy Fife chaulks up another win for the Rutherflo Fastball Club.
Monday August 3 - Cobourg 6 vs Rutherflo 1: In the bottom of the 1st inning ex-Rutherflo star catcher Richard Ferguson nailed a two run home-run for Cobourg Heritage Harbour. Notes: Byron Baraieski takes the loss for Rutherflo.
Tournament Notes:
Rutherflo's record in the tourney was 4 wins and 2 losses.
Rutherflo scored 32 runs and gave up 20 runs in 6 games.
Rutherflo officially ended up in 4th overall.
The Mitchell Mets won the intermediate division with a 7-4 decision over Carp Valley.
The Owen Sound Tiremen won the Senior division by pounding the Waterloo Twins 10-1.
Rob Doncaster had a .556 batting average. He went 11 for 18, with 10 singles and a double.
