Hastings Annual Tournament - Hastings, Ontario - July 3, 4 and 5th
Trenton 6 vs Rutherflo 3 - Friday July 3, 1998 - 7:30pm - At the start of the 1st inning Dave Waldie hit a homerun on the first pitch of the game against Bryce Rowe (pitcher for Trenton). Craig Minifie hit 2 monster solo homeruns both to left field and across the street into the supermarket parking lot and one off the hockey arena. Unfortunalty Rutherflo lost. Notes: Jeff Murphy gave up all 6 runs in 7 complete innings. Craig Minifie hit his 6th and 7th homerun on the year for Rutherflo.
Rutherflo 6 vs Cobourg 1 - Saturday July 4th - 5:15pm - Dave Waldie started the scoring for Rutherflo in the 2nd inning with another solo homerun to the right field playground. The very next inning in the 3rd Craig Minifie hit a towering solo homerun once again. In the 4th inning with Rob Doncaster on third, Dave Waldie hit a single which drove in Bob. Then in the 5th inning it all broke loose. Bryon Baraieski started it off with a single (Dave Hare replaces him on first for more speed). Tommy Jopling hits a double which moves Hare to third for Pat Rutherford who ends up singling home Hare. Then Rob Doncaster gets a walk to load the bases for John Garland. John grounds out but 1 more run scores. Steve Connelly then hits a soft shot to third which the third baseman can't handle and Pat Rutherford scores and Connelly is safe at first. Dave Waldie then comes up and grounds out which drives in Rob Doncaster for another run. Notes: Bryon Baraieski throws a 5 hitter for the win for Rutherflo. Colborne mustered up 10 hits against Cobourg. Original start time for this game was 2pm, but because of heavy rain all the games were delayed.
Rutherflo 3 vs Hoards Station 1 - Saturday July 4 - 9:30pm - Rutherflo started off the scoring in the 4th inning after Bryon Baraieski was hit by a pitch and Connelly and Doncaster walked to load the bases for Dave Hare. Dave hits a grounder to second which the second baseman couldn't handle and a run scores and everybody is safe. In the 6th inning Rob Doncaster leads off with a walk. John Garland bunts Bob to second. Dave Hare drives in Bob with a thunderous shot up the middle for a single. Ron Herriot starts off the 7th inning with a single up the center. Craig Minifie then comes up and also hits a single to centerfield which moves Ronny to third. Craig gets to 2nd on a pass ball, then Tom Jopling draws a walk to load the bases for Rob Doncaster. Rob also walks, which allows Ron Herriot to score easily. Cobourg gets on the board when Dwayne Corkum flys out to deep left field with the bases loaded which scores one. Notes: Randy Fife goes 7 complete innings striking out 12 batters. Rob Doncaster was 0 for 0 in 4 at bats with had 3 walks.
Rutherflo 2 vs Trenton 1 - Sunday July 5 - 3:00pm - The Championship Game. Rutherflo gets on the board first in the top of the 3rd inning when Craig Minifie singles home Steve Connelly who had a single and stole second on a passball to score on Craig's hit. Then in the top of the 5th inning Bryon Baraieski starts Rutherflo off with a single. Dave Hare comes in to run for BB's and gets to second on a error by the pitcher. Tommy Jopling then comes up a rips a double scoring Dave Hare. Trenton gets a run in the 6th inning and had a runner on third in the bottom of the 7th inning with two out but Rutherflo stood their ground and won the game and the tournament. Notes: Bryon Baraieski pitched 7 complete innings getting the win for Rutherflo. Bryce Rowe pitched for Trenton. Evan Loucks (aka "Father of the Year") made several spectacular catches out in left field for Colborne. There was a moment of silence for the late Percy Gibbons, a dedicated fastball fan from Scarborough, after the game.
Tournament Notes: Rutherflo outscored their oppenents 14 to 9 in four games spread over three days. Rutherflo had 3 wins and 1 loss during the tourney. Byron Baraieski had 2 wins of the 3 wins for Rutherflo, Randy Fife had the other one. Craig Minifie now has 8 homeruns in only four tournaments for Colborne. Colborne Rutherflo's record through 4 complete tournaments is 16 wins and 3 losses, good for winning all four tournaments so far. The Cold Springs Cats won the Masters Division Championship over Campbellford at 5pm on Sunday with Roger Cole getting the victory.
