Dave Waldie article from North Dakota, NAFA 1997
Dave Waldie's "Smoking Bat"...
Quoting Casey Stengel, "Good hitting will stop good hitting and vice versa." In the case of Colborne Rutherflo shortstop, Dave Waldie.....it would be vice versa.
Another batting record going down, Waldie's 16 hits sets a NAFA class AA World Series record. He broke the mark of 15 hits set by Ron Kendez in 1995 playing for Long Beach, CA Stout Tower Stars. The .667 mark equals the record the mark set by Fred Hanker, a teammate of Kendez, also in 1995. However, he had 16 hits and Hanker had 14. Waldie actually sat out in parts of two games! He could have had four more at bats.
Here is Waldie's 1997 NAFA performance...
vs SFBlack Diamond ... (1b, 6-3, 1b, 1b)
vs Yuciapa, A's ............ ( 2b, 2b)
vs Quali Graph ............. (1b, 1b, 6-3, HR)
vs ABF ......................... (1b, 2b)
vs Panchieri ................. (F9, 1b, 1b, 3U)
vs Big Johns ................ (2b, K, 1b, K)
vs Big Johns ................ (HR, F8, K, 1b)
Consistency.....Waldie had two hits each in five games, and three hits each the other two. He was responsible for 16 of his team's runs, scoring 9 and batting in 8. He hit 2 homeruns.
