The Combat Rules for the CDC Room

NOTE:

These rules WILL be followed while in this room. If you can't do it or don't like them, you're not forced to come in.

We want to stop the idiotic posts and god characters etc.? then lets settle on a method (note: NOT system, method) of running combat. we criticize newbies when they post something like this:

*cuts off his/her head* but then we, and yes i myself was guilty of htis, i don't pretend perfection. *L* we post something like this: *cuts off his hands* what kind of crap is that?

this is how it will be here. ex:

(A: is a qualentesi elvin fighter/red mage and B is a human female theif)

A:*draws his blade and makes a slash AT, her head* (note, it was an ATTEMPT, to often, even the best of us, automatically assume success)

B: *she blocks with her blade, and chops at his neck with her free hand*(note here, that the DEFENDER decided the result, and DID get a chance to react)

now, lets take a look at this, again in another light.

A: *he ducks her attack, and slashes at the same moment with such force that the blade could cut through her like paper* (note here again, its only an attempt)

B: *she leaps back, not even attempting to stop such a blow, but the blade scores her ribs badly, blood oozes from the wound, she begins casting as she backs away* (note here, she did not immediately cast. she BEGAN casting. any attempt to cast a spell or teleport or shift form etc, should take two turns or more depending on the complexity of the spell. that way, the other person gets a chance to disrupt the casters concentration, disciplines should be treated as normal attacks in that they take only one turn, but again do not assume your character succeeded in harming its target with it, since some characters have items that would even prevent the attempt of such a use. or have a natural resistence.)

did i mention that there is almost NEVER a dispute as to the winner of fights under this system? how often do we have to hear about somebody getting killed here and complain about it for a week or something like that? every other day sounds about right.

A: *he leaps at her as quickly as he can, his blade out before him, slashing at her shoulder*

B: *she moves back out of the way, twisting so that he flies past her, she releases the spell, sleep* (puts character to sleep for up to 8 combat rounds) (note the description of the spell. we don't all play by the same system, and so don't all have the same disciplinens and array of spells. so shouldn't some kind of description be in order?)

A: *the spell fails* (elves has a natural resistence to sleep spells, so would anybody have respected this: *she casts sleep, putting him into a deep slumber* ) i think not.

now finally, lets assume that a character, (in some systems this is legit in others it is not) has more than one attack per turn. this is considered illegal in wbs regardless of character stats etc. but if it WEREN'T, then we could handle it several ways. letting the other person know, and letting them react one by one.

A:attack post one

B: defends

A: attack post 2

B: defends

A: attack post 3

B: defends, then gets to attack.

or

A: attack post one

A: attack post 2

A: attack post 3

B: defend defend defend attack you all get the idea. those are some fairly simple rules, if you need a demonstration fight to illustrate it better than my attempt here, then go to www.wbs.net and after ya register, ask to see a demonstration fight in the inn of the weary traveler, to see how they do it. OR, contact me, and i'll arrange one to be held here in the chathouse at the earliest convenience.

this is a simple system, it took me a while to explain it yes, but thats only because few here actually follow it. to summarize:

>1. do not automatically assume success, give the person a chance to react.

2. defender decides result and damage to their character.

3. spells, disciplines, psi powers etc. take a minimum of 2 turns.

is this so hard?

Short Version

No one post kills OR one post hits.

DEFENDER decides the result of the ATTEMPT to harm him/her.

Magic takes 2 or more turns to use.

The Target MUST react before the next attack can be made.

ABOVE ALL REMEMBER THIS ONE RULE!!! DO NOT TAKE THINGS OUT OF CHARACTER!!! I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH! IF SOMEONE IS BOTHERING YOU IN CHARACTER, DON'T TAKE IT OUT ON THE PERSON BEHIND HIM OR HER! IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY SOMEONE ROLE PLAYS, YOU'RE NOT FORCED TO RP WITH THEM. ITS THAT SIMPLE, IF THEY KEEP BOTHERING YOU, REPORT THEM.

Now, one final piece of advice, this isn't a rule, just a bit of advice gained from experience with the best and the worst of the role players of several chat systems. If your character dies legitimately, and cannot be ressurected, create a new one, don't come around under the same handle for any longer than it takes to announce his/her death. Now afterwards when you make the new character, don't make it just a carbon copy of the old one, with all the previous personality, biases, hatreds, and animosities and enemies the old one had. thats no different than just changing the name. That just serves to annoy people. A relative is something that varies, its generally ill advised. A new character should be just that NEW. But if its well played, it can work. Its up to you, just a bit of advice from someone who has seen it all or very nearly over the last few years.
