We Are All One World

Ducks, geese, and other birds are proof to me that this world belongs to all of us.

Consider the Arctic Tern, a lovely (and somewhat pesky) bird that I always thought of as part of Alaska. They used to dive bomb me as I canoed around the ponds and lakes of Talkeetna, Alaska where I grew up. And when I was a child, I didn't realize yet that the Arctic Terns migration patterns carry them to nearly every continent. Those little birds fly up to 10,000 miles a year between summer and winter habitat. I haven't even been off the North American continent!

Another bird that I grew up watching on the lakes and ponds of Alaska is the Common Loon. After moving to Reno, Nevada, I came to realize that each spring Walker Lake in Nevada becomes temporary home to thousands of loons. Yet, the Walker Lake ecosystem is in crisis (you can read more about that at the Walker Lake website). I'm worried for Walker Lake because if the crisis isn't solved, considering there has been drought all over the West, I figure someday there will be less loons in Alaska calling out in the evening. They are very beautiful birds.

This world belongs to all of us. That is one of the reasons for supporting such groups as Ducks Unlimited, the world-leader in wetlands conservation. They have worked hard to promote the habitats that water fowl need to survive... And, they are one of those organizations that gives you something beautiful for your support... go check out their licensed products. Lovely artwork!

This page was created from an image that I took of a mallard drake at the Fish Hatchery at the Bonneville Dam, Cacade Locks, Oregon. A mating couple of mallards was swimming around in the sturgeon pond... the whole area is a sunny garden. It was a very pretty day.

Background Set

I created the Mallard background set in February 2004.

Can You Use This Background Set?

You are welcome to use any or all of the images that make up this "Mallard" background set on personal, not-for-profit, and in fact, even on for-profit web pages. Though it is not a requirement, please use one of my logos and link back to ---

Java Lake Applet

The free java lake applet by David Griffiths that I used was available at http://www.free-applets.com/. The website was under construction the last time I checked. I have also included a second image to use as a header if you would prefer not to use java.

Alternate image for a header

Font

The font face on this page is "dauphin" (which is hard to read really, so I'd only suggest using it on pages that are supposed to be cool to look at, but not give a lot of information); the dark font color is "green", the light font color is "00CC66".
