20 Recommendations of the

World Health Organization

Immediate

  1. Identify arsenicoses patients and at risk patients.
  2. Provide treatment and nutritious food to the patients.
  3. Provide equipment and medicines at health centers to ensure the treatment.
  4. Set up regional facilities for detection of arsenic in water and human body in collaboration of donor agencies.
  5. Create alternate source of safe drinking water.
  6. Provide training to health personnel and staff for improving knowledge and efficiency in the diagnosis and management of arsenicoses.
  7. Enhance awareness of people through massive health education campaigns.
  8. Conduct integrated and intensive surveys in Bangladesh and in West Bengal by the support of donor agencies.

Long Term

  1. Establish national database on arsenic problem.
  2. Examine efficacies of different de-arsination methods.
  3. Design local projects suitable for specific problem prone areas.
  4. Assess types of training need.
  5. Build organizational structure to check drinking water quality.
  6. Build organizational structure to follow up arsenicoses patients on regular basis.
  7. Build National Reference Laboratory for the detection and evaluation of arsenic presence in drinking water and human body.
  8. Provide support to research program relating to arsenic contamination and reduction of risks.
  9. Assess need of fund.
  10. Establish bilateral collaboration with the Government of India in exchanging experiences, travels and joint initiatives.
  11. Strengthen International collaboration for the solution of the problem.
