INTER AFRICA GROUP
The Inter Africa Group was formed in 1992 by Abdul Mohamed Ababora, Jelal Mohamed, Henok Kifle and Endreas Eshete, a university professor (philosophy) in Addis Ababa. It was formally an NGO based in Nairobi and Addis Ababa. It is financed by the United States mainly. The organization helped monitor the 1995 elections. It is involved in development and education projects and organized in Addis Ababa an international symposium on the transitional economy.
Abdul Mohamed Ababora was born in Jimma and educated at the St. Joseph private school in Addis Ababa. In his mid forties, he is the son of a merchant in the "mercato" in Addis Ababa. He went to the United States in the early seventies and studied there. He worked for the World Council of Churches and other NGOs and remained some time in Kenya and in Sudan. He worked for UNICEF in Nairobi for many years and had close relations with the SPLA (Sudan People's Liberation Army), especially with Lam Akol and Mansour Khaled. He was one of the nine members of the Peace Committee which met Issayas Afeworki from the EPLF, and Meles Zenawi from the TPLF, at the London Peace Conference in May 1991. The other members of this committee included Professor Mesfin Wolde Mariam (now EHRCO -Ethiopian Human Rights Council- chairman), Endreas Eshete, Henok Kifle, Yishak Kifle (now a member of CAFPDE and a business man, etc).
Inter Africa Group is now composed mainly of Abdul Mohamed Ababora, Endreas Eshete and Jelal Mohamed. Former members such as Henok Kifle have left. It is a powerful behind-the-scenes group. Many newspapers in Addis Ababa have voiced criticism of the group and Abdul, accusing them of being linked to the Ethiopian government and too close to US policy.
