Two journalists releasedInternational Freedom Of Expression Exchange (Toronto) March 2, 2000
Toronto - According to information gathered by RSF, Abera Wogi, editor-in-chief of the private weekly "Maebel", was released two weeks ago, after having completed his sentence. The journalist had been detained since 12 May 1999 in Addis Ababa's Kerchiele prison. He was accused of "defamation" and "fabrication and dissemination of false information".
In his newspaper, he had exposed the motivation of a former general in exile in Sudan, who had accused Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of killing eighty persons with cyanide when he was fighting against the government.
Bizunesh Kebede, editor-in-chief of "Zegabi", was released on bail about a month ago. The exact date of her release is unknown. She was arrested in 1999 for unknown reasons.
