MACLEAN, John LeBroq - 89, Barry's Mills, Pictou, passed
away Thursday, June 14, 2001, in Northumberland Veterans' Unit, Pictou.
Born in Georgetown, P.E.I., he was the son of the late Russel and Grace
(Nickerson) Maclean. John was the secretary-treasurer of the Retail Wholesale
Department Store Union for the Maritime Provinces for 25 years retiring
in 1984. He served in the Second World War with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders
and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 16, Pictou. He was
a member of Pictou United Church and an elder for over 40 years, recently
given the title as honorary elder. He was one of the founding members of
the Clan MacLean Society. John was keenly involved in politics and was
a former NDP candidate at both the federal and provincial levels. He was
past president of the Pictou County Branch of the Canadian Bible Society.
He had an intense interest and was a charter member of the credit union
and co-operative movements in Pictou County and unselfishly worked for
the success of these all of his life. He was one of the first organic gardeners
in the area and also enjoyed genealogy and history. He is survived by his
wife of 62 years, Margaret; sons, John (Marjorie) and Russel (Jean), both
of Pictou; daughter, Sheila (Barry) MacDonald, Halifax; five grandchildren;
three great-grandchildren and four nieces. He was predeceased by sister,
Jean Harries. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Saturday in McLaren Funeral
Home, Pictou. Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in Pictou United Church,
Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. Committal service will take place
11 a.m. Monday, June 18, in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens. Family flowers
only please. Donations in memory may be made to the Northumberland Veterans'
Unit or a charity of your choice.
