McLEAN, Alan Young - 55, 75 Coburn Dr., Fredericton, N.B., died January 8, 1994, as the result of a car/pedestrian accident at Woodstock Road, Fredericton. Born in Scotland, he was a professional engineer with a Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow. A fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada, he was a former faculty member at the Technical University of Nova Scotia, Halifax. He began his career with the Distillers' Co. and the National Engineering Laboratory in Scotland. In 1973, he co-founded Martec Ltd., a Nova Scotia company that specializes in contract research in structural engineering, ocean engineering, computer science and environmental studies. He took a leave of absence from his position as company president and CEO to assume his duties asholder of the J. Herbert Smith ACOA Chair in Technology Management and Entrepreneurship at UNB in June, 1990. In his three academic years at UNB, he designed and introduced six new courses and personally delivered five of them. In recognition of the importance of management of technology to economic survival, he created the diploma program in technology management and entrepreneurship at UNB which started in January, 1991. He used his vast management experience and marketing skills to make both students and members of the business community aware of the skills needed to take a product from a concept to the marketplace. At UNB, he also conducted research on socio-technical subjects such as consortium building and educational barriers to the introduction of new technology. He gave numerous presentations and wrote and published several cases and papers. His academic service to the university included a study of the relationship between Incutech and UNB, organizing a survey of international market demand for geomatics education courses by UNB personnel and membership in UNB's Fredericton Senate and in Technology Partners Forum, which promotes information interchange in New Brunswick. For over 20 years, he was actively involved in yachting, both as a competitor and in race management, from the local level to Olympic trials. He was a member of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; three daughters, Louise, Morven; a granddaughter, all of Vancouver; Morag (Mrs. Alain Champy), France; son, Alisdair, Kingston, Ont.; Malcolm, studying in Moscow; brother, Donald, Calgary; sister, Elspeth (Mrs. John Gilmour), Edinburgh, Scotland. MacLEAN, J. David - 66, Windsor Junction, died January 22, 1994, in the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Bible Hill, he was a son of the late Everett D. and Grace (Ross) MacLean. He was a retired manufactureres' agent representing various companies in Atlantic Canada. He served on the building committee of the new St. John's United Church, Fall River. He was a team leader of the Open Heart Patient Support Group, Maritime Heart Centre; vice-president of the Bedford/Fall River PC Association; area director of Bedford/Musquodoboit PC Association; past president of Dartmouth Curling Club; charter member and past president of Sundowners International. In 1990, he played second stone on the Nova Scotia Senior Mens' Curling Team at the National Curling Conspiel. In March 1985, he was commended for his long record of service by the Nova Scotia Environmental Control Council. In 1991, he served as commissioner for Census Canada for Halifax West. In 1992, he served as special returning officer for the Armed Forces Referendum vote for Atlantic Command. In 1993, he served as a special revising officer for Elections Canada for Halifax West. He is survived by his wife, the former Hazel Lockhart; two daughters, Lorraine (Mrs. Donald Burch), Chester Basin; Ondra (Mrs. Richard MacPherson), Fall River; three sons, Rev. MACLEAN TONGE, (Umlah) Alberta - 105, Halifax, died March 6, 1994, in Victoria Hall, Halifax. Born 1888, in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Michael Balfour and Eliza Mitchell (Boak) Umlah. She graduated from Dalhousie University with a BA in 1910. During the First World War, she served overseas with the Women's Reserve Ambulance Corps and was based at Peel House in London, the center for commonwealth army and navy personnel. On staff at Dalhousie, she developed the extension lecture series and initiated and ran the student housing program. She held several offices in the Dalhousie Alumni Association. On retirement, she lived for 40 years in Hantsport. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie J. Ford, Halifax; a grandson and granddaughter. She was predeceased by her first husband, Maj. Walter Maclean (C.A.M.C.); second husband, Alfred J. Tonge. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport.
