He was active in the Cooperative movement and served on the board of directors of the British Canadian Co-op Society; Princess Credit Union; the old Harbourview Hospital, and at the time of his death was an active member of the board of managers of the Miners Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines. He was a long standing supporter of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and the New Democratic Party having been a delegate at its founding convention in 1961. He was a former employee of the Harbourview Hospital. Born at Purlbrook, she was a daughter of the late Donald and Mary (Kennedy) MacLean. She entered the Sisters of St. Martha in 1928. She served as kitchen supervisor for 39 years in many hospitals including St. Michael's, Lethbridge; Mineral Springs, Banff; St. Joseph's, Glace Bay; St. Rita's, Sydney. She also served at St. Martha's Convent, R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Bethany and the Bishop's Residence. In 1972 she retired to Bethany and worked in the altar bread department. MacLEAN, Rev. John Lauchlin (Langley) - 62, Cabot Towers, Sydney, died September 18, 1995, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born February 13, 1933 in Eden, Inverness Co., he was a son of the late James and Charlotte (MacLean) MacLean. He received his early education at Sydney Academy and spent a year at Xavier Junior College, Sydney. He graduated from Acadia University with a bachelor of arts degree and a bachelor of divinity degree from McGill. He held a testamur in theology from Presbyterian College, McGill University. After studies at the University of Glasgow and Ottawa Teachers College, he took his theological education at University of Trinity College and St. Augustine's Seminary, Toronto. He was ordained to the priesthood on November 30, 1992, in St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney. Prior to this, he served the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia. In 1992, he was appointed assistant at St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney; in 1993, he became the parish priest of St. Joseph's, South West Margaree and St. Patrick's, North East Margaree; in 1995, he served in Holy Guardian Angels Parish, L'Ardoise. Due to health reasons, he retired from active ministry earlier this year. Surviving are sisters, Isabelle Cooper, Sydney; Naomi Walker, Dartmouth; brothers, Charles, Toronto; Angus, Sydney.
