On many occasions, he donated his time, energy and talent in aid of charitable organizations. He was active in the formation of St. Anthony Daniel Parish and in many Scottish organizations and societies that promoted Scottish culture on Cape Breton Island. MacLEAN, George - 79, Victoria Vale, died September 16, 1996, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late Murdoch J. and Jennie (Haggett) MacLean. He was employed as a miner in Chester and Caribou in the 1930s before serving with the Calgary Tanks during the Second World War. In 1944, he was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery in the field at the Battle of Cassino, Italy. After the war, he was employed at the Barite Mine in Walton. In 1950, he began working at Simpson Sears, Toronto, Ont., retiring from Sears Canada in 1976 to Victoria Vale, and was a recent resident of the Veteran's Unit of Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. He was a keen sports enthusiast. Born in Ardoise, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late William and Annie (Collier) Davis. A school teacher by profession, she taught for over 21 years at MacKay Section, Hants Co.; Magdalen Islands, Que.; Three Mile Plains; Ellershouse; Sweets Corner and Hants West Rural High School, Brooklyn. She retired in 1976 as a grade three teacher at Brooklyn and District Elementary School. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Retired Teachers Association. She was an active member of the Newport United Church, where she was treasurer of the UCW for many years. She was very active in the community with grandparent reading at the elementary school and with the senior games activities committee. She was also past secretary of the Quarter Horse Tri Breed Shows in Windsor and Halifax. For many years, she was the unofficial score keeper for Barrell & Pole Bending Riders. She was an avid bridge player. She was a life member of the United Church of Canada, as well as a longtime choir member and treasurer of Unit N of First United Church, Truro. MacLEAN, Peter Francis - 97, loving husband, devoted father, gentle grandfather and caring brother, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 7, 1996, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site. Born August 30, 1899, at MacKays Point, he was the first of 12 children of the late Vincent MacLean and Theresa MacNeil. In his early life he worked the Saskatchewan wheat fields and later went to Detroit, where he worked for PaigeJewitt Motors and later Dodge Brothers, now known as Chrysler Corp. In 1925 he returned to Cape Breton where he owned and operated MacLean's Esso Service, Iona, for 57 years. Throughout his life he had a keen interest in sailing, boatbuilding, Scottish music, violins, Canadian politics and the Montreal Canadiens. He was an active member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers' Association and gave generously of his time and talents, teaching violin to his family members and local youth. As well, he made a valued contribution to his community. He was a founding member of both the Grand Narrows and District Board of Trade and the Nova Scotia Highland Village Association, the latter of which he served as president for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Flora (Gillis); son, John Alexander; daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Larry Nestman, Florence and Joe Kanary, Theresa Schultz, Helen and Jimmy MacDonald; grandchildren, Lara, Natasha and Peter Nestman, Leah and Lucy Kanary, Shamus and Scott MacDonald; beloved relatives, Lila and Ron MacLean, Ada and Alex MacLean. Surviving members of his immediate family are sisters, Helen MacNeil, Theresa Morrison, Sydney; Mary MacDonald, Lucy Bush, Baddeck; Anne Gallagher, Florida; brothers, John, Detroit; Michael Anthony, MacKays Point. (Morrison) Morrison. She was an adherent of Farquharison Memorial Presbyterian Church, Middle River. She served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. She was employed as a CNA at Victoria County Memorial Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 53, Baddeck, and a member of the Eastern Star. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Campbell, Isabel MacRae, Agnes MacLean; brothers, John W., Franklin Donald. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Eastern Star service 7 p.m., both Wednesday in MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday in Knox Presbyterian Church, Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. Burial in Middle River Cemetery. Donations to any charity.
