McLEAN, (Leinen) Lena Muriel - 85, passed away January 21, 1997, in Willows Nursing Home, Aurora, Ont. Born July 11, 1911, in Montreal, she was a daughter of the late Rudolphe and Lena (Graelz) Leinen. She worked for over 50 years at the Villa, Thornhill, Ont., and was a soldier in the Salvation Army. She is survived by daughters, Evelyn (Aubrey) Tattrie, Tatamagouche; Donna (Gary) Schantz, Yorba Linda, Calif.; son, Bruce (Sherry) McLean, Markham, Ont.; grandchildren, Darlene (Peter) Duggan, Dawn (Brian) MacPherson, Tatamagouche; Dale (Marianne) Tattrie, Malagash; Denise Anderson, Irishtown, P.E.I.; Dwayne Tat- trie, Halifax; Kathy (Reginald) MacGrath, Pugwash; Derek (Kim) Tattrie, Earltown; Salena (Rob) Teerman, New Jersey; Katie Schantz, Yorba Linda, Calif.; Joseph McLean, Pickering, Ont.; Junior McLean, Markham. Great-grandchildren, Richard, Ryan Duggan, Melanie MacPherson, Tatamagouche; Darren, Tara Aitchison, Gail and Dominique Anderson, Irishtown; Sara and Chad MacGrath, Pugwash; Samantha Tattrie, Earltown. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald McLean; an infant son; grandson, Dion (Mickey) Tattrie. A family service was held on January 24 with interment of her ashes both at the Highland Gardens Cemetery, Thornhill, Ont.

MacLEAN, Hector J. S. - 49, Toronto, Ont., formerly of Gillis Point and Iona, died January 28, 1997, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born at Gillis Point, he was a son of the late Andrew and Helen (MacKenzie) MacLean. He was employed by Inmont Paints, Toronto. Surviving are sisters, Roslyn MacRae, Jacinta MacKinnon, Charleen MacNeil, Baddeck; Mary, Dartmouth; Grace, Calgary; brother, Gordon, Port Hawkesbury; three nieces and four nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Kenzie. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. MacLEAN, (Barnett) Marcella May (Sally) - 69, Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of Munroe Street, Trenton, died February 1, 1997, in the villa. Born in Trenton, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Olive (Fraser) Barnett. During the Second World War, she worked in the Shell Finish Department, Trenton Industries, and was a homemaker most of her life. McLEAN, Laurie Stewart - 76, 458 Robie St., Truro, died February 13, 1997, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Debert, he was a son of the late Marven and Mary (Rawding) McLean. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in the RCAF, and was a former member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 106, Debert. He was involved in the trucking industry for most of his working life. He is survived by his wife, the former Muriel Willena Starritt; daughter, Lynda and husband Bill Simmons, Greenfield, Colchester Co.; brothers, Sinclair, Barrie, Ont.; Garnald, Hamilton, Ont.; sisters, Alma McCully, Verna Whitehorn, both of Niagara Falls, Ont.; Ruth Hart, Belleville, Ont.; Leone Giles, Picton, Ont. McLEAN, Archibald Aloysius (Allie) - 79, 28 Tanya Dr., Glace Bay, died February 16, 1997, in Glace Bay Health Care Corp., South Street. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Archie and Mary (MacMaster) McLean. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas. He was retired from Devco for the last 25 years. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 3, and a member of St. Anne's Parish. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are son, Archie and wife Susan, Glace Bay, with whom he resided; two grandchildren; step-children, Gerald Gardiner, British Columbia; Carol McVeigh, Delores LeBlanc, Dominion. McLEAN, (Canavan) Ella Rose - 89, Berwick, died February 20, 1997, in Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Hillsvale, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Leonard and Bertha (Davis) Canavan. She was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Berwick, and was the former organist at St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Windsor Junction. Prior to her marriage, she was a school teacher and had taught in Nova Scotia schools and on the Magdalen Islands, Que. She had resided in Lakeview, Halifax Co., then Moncton, N.B.; Woodville, Kings Co., and later in Berwick. MacLEAN, Sister Violetta, CND - Sister St. Francis Miriam, member of the Congregation of Notre Dame, Holy Angels Convent, Sydney, died February 21, 1997, in Holy Redeemer Health Care Centre, Whitney Pier. Born December 7, 1920, in Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Matheson) MacLean. She made her religious profession in the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1942. She obtained a BA from St. Francis Xavier University; M.Ed. in guidance from the University of Ottawa, and a MA in clinical psychology from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. She taught school in New Glasgow, Antigonish, Sydney Mines and New Victoria. For many years, she was on the staff of Holy Angels High School, Sydney, as a teacher and later as a guidance counsellor. Subsequently she was employed as a child psychologist with the Cape Breton District School Board. For five years after her retirement from the public school system, she conducted classes for preschool children in the north end of Sydney. For many years she taught religion to young people in various parishes in the Sydney area. Surviving are sister, Mae Vanderhyden, Cambridge, Ont.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Kaye MacDonald; brothers, Peter, Frank, Garfield, Alexander (Sandy); half-brother, Michael Sutherland; half-sister, Josephine Vickers. MacLEAN, (McIsaac) Sybil May - 87, formerly of Halifax, died March 25, 1997, in Northills Nursing Home, Granville Ferry, Annapolis Co. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Daniel J. and Annabel (Dicks) McIsaac. She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church of St. David, where she was very active in the Ladies Guild. She was a member of IWK Hospital for Children Ladies Auxiliary; the Lionettes; longtime member of the Halifax Ladies Curling Club and Waegwoltic Club. She had been an avid tennis and badminton player. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are sons, John Raymond and wife Linda, Riverview, N.B.; Dr. Paul MacLean and wife Trinda Lee, Middleton; grandchildren, John R., Allison, Sandy, Lara, Trent, Kail; great-granddaughter, Emilie; nephew, Douglas McIsaac. MacLEAN, Seeley Angus - 74, Hubbards, died March 29, 1997, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, New Infirmary Site. Born in Hubbards, he was a son of the late James and Maude (Bruce) MacLean. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served overseas from 1939-1945, with the West Nova Scotia Regiment. He retired from Sears after 21 years of service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, having done both in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Born in 1908 in Dalhousie, Kings Co., she was a daughter of the late Freeman and Mary Robar. She was an adherent of St. Paul's United Church. She was an avid card player, attending many games until recently. She is survived by son, Malcolm and wife Jen Marshall, Rocklin; Albert and wife Florence Marshall, Westville; daughters, Mary Marshall, Westville; Ria and husband Lou MacLeod, Niagara Falls, Ont.; Linda and husband Greg Pelerine, Stoney Creek, Ont.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers, Cecil, Berwick; Burleigh, South Grafton, United States; sisters, Alice, Cambridge; Etta, Cape Cod, Mass. She was predeceased by her first husband, John R. MacLEAN, Kenneth - 70, Dartmouth, formerly of Florence, Cape Breton Co., died May 4, 1997, in Dartmouth General Hospital. He was a son of the late Robert and Christina (MacNeil) MacLean. He served with the Merchant Navy; worked in the old Sydney colliery, Florence, and on the Imperial Oil ships. Surviving are brother, Carleton, Gaetz Brook; sisters, Lorna Menard, New Port, N.H.; Beryl Higgins, Dartmouth; Marguerite Lydiard, Halifax; Robena Crooks, Lake Echo; Christina Allen, Sylvia Dolomont, North Sydney. MacLEAN, Rev. Leonard Hector (Butch) - 77, retired professor of business administration at St. Francis Xavier University, died at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish, on Monday, May 5, 1997. Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Archibald and Christena (MacNeil) MacLean. He attended Sydney Academy and graduated from St. F.X. University in 1942. He completed his theological education at Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax, and was ordained to the priesthood on May 19, 1946, in Halifax. He was appointed assistant parish priest at St. Anne's Parish, Glace Bay, serving there until he was appointed parish priest of St. George's Parish, Georgeville, and St. Mary's, Maryvale. In 1956, he was appointed to the staff of St. F.X. University, teaching in the business administration department. In 1960, he completed a master of business administration degree from the University of Detroit, Mich. He resumed teaching at St. F.X. University until his retirement in 1984, after which he resided at the university. Due to ill health, Father MacLean took up residence at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home in April of 1997. Father MacLean served on numerous committees at the university during his teaching career and as retreat director and spiritual director for the nurses of St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish. Father MacLean was also a member of the Senate of Priests of the Diocese of Antigonish. Throughout his life, he was an avid skier and golfer. He is survived by brothers, James and Redmond, Sydney; Michael, Orillia, Ont.; sisters, Mary (Mrs. Cecil McGrath) and Eileen (Mrs. Bernard Johnston), Sydney; Theresa (Mrs. John Rostek), New Waterford. He was predeceased by brother, John; sisters, Sister Anne (Sister Mary Leonarda), CSM, and Marie (Mrs. Dannie Gillis). The body will rest at Morrison Hall, St. F.X. University, Antigonish, with visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 p.m. Wednedsay. Vigil service 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. F.X. University Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated by Most Rev. She was an adherent of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines. MacLEAN, Bruce Jerome - 75, Elmwood, Lunenburg Co., died May 14, 1997 in South Shore Regional Hospital. Born in Scarsdale, Lunenburg Co., he was a son of the late Daniel and Hazel (Robinson) MacLean. He served overseas during the Second World War as well as the Allied Occupation of Europe. He later served in the Korean Conflict as a member of the 2nd. Batallion Black Watch Regiment of Canada. He was also a longtime member of the Black Watch Association. He was a member of the New Germany Legion, Branch 102. He was also an active member of the Lunenburg Fiddlers Club and in recent years was made an honorary member of the club. Surviving are his companion, Virginia Dunn; sisters, Virginia Wolfe, Charlotte Burns, Halifax, brothers, William, Elmwood; Chester, Wentzell Lake; Daniel, Liverpool; Rev. MacLEAN, Robert R. - 72, 31 Morrison St., Glace Bay, died May 15, 1997, in Glace Bay General Hospital, South Street. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Bert and Sarah (MacDonald) MacLean. He was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay. He was a coal miner and worked in No. 4 and No. 26 collieries and retired in 1984 after 43 years service. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. A graduate of Nova Scotia Normal College, she was a dedicated teacher for many years in Louisbourg, retiring in 1989. She was instrumental in the formation of the Louisbourg Home and School Association. She was active in the Girl Guide movement and instructed rangers in Louisbourg. An adherent of First United Church, Louisbourg, she was active in church activities and served on the board of stewards. She was a charter member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 62, and its ladies auxiliary, and was past president of the legion. Ian's friendly smile and great sense of humour will be fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. MacLEAN, Ira Henry - 66, Little Harbour, Pictou Co., died November 17, 1997, at home. Born in Hampshire, P.E.I., he was a son of the late Richard W. and Mildred (Larter) MacLean. In earlier years, he worked for Marathon Pulp & Paper Mill, Marathon, Ont. He became a stationary engineer 1st class, working for Stora, Port Hawkesbury, and for Scott Maritimes Ltd., Abercrombie, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Little Harbour Presbyterian Church; Hudson Masonic Lodge 77, Thorburn, and Little Harbour Volunteer Fire Department. He was very active with Little Harbour Community Centre. He was an avid golfer, hunter, fisherman and gardener. He was a loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife, the former Marjorie Jean Sanderson; daughters, Heather (Mrs. Brian Campbell), Stellarton; Marlene (Mrs. Ron Halisky), Calgary; Beth (Mrs. Geoff Skerrett), Dartmouth; Laurie Gillis (Phillip Stewart), Thorburn; sisters, Hilda (Mrs. Roy White), Parry Sound, Ont.; Rena (Mrs. Tom Lees), Marathon, Ont.; Jean (Mrs. Layton Thompson), Wiltshire, P.E.I.; grandchildren, Travis and Adele Campbell, Nicole and Tracy Murray, Ashley Cassidy, Erin and Derek Halisky, Bradley and Christopher Gillis. McLEAN, (Starritt) Muriel Willena - 78, 458 Robie St., Truro, died December 6, 1997, in Munroe Lodge, Truro. Born in Bass River, Colchester Co., she was a daughter of the late William and Myrtle (McLellan) Starritt. She was a member of the United Church of Canada. She was a graduate of the Provincial Normal College, Truro, and studied at Acadia and Saint Mary's universities to upgrade her teaching license. She taught in Bass River and Debert, where she held the position of principal for five years. She was also principal at East Court Road School, Bible Hill, and also taught at Central School, Bible Hill. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Lori Anne and husband Bill Simmons, Greenfield; brother, John A. and wife Lucile Starritt; sister, Martha and husband Harold Ettinger, Shubenacadie; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Laurie. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mattatall Funeral Home, Truro, Rev. Brent Carter officiating.
