MacLEAN, E. Calvin - 61, Sydney, died January 19, 1998, at home. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Angus and Christine (MacRury) MacLean. He was a member and elder of St. Andrew's United Church. He was employed with the Department of Education for 33 years, holding a number of positions including area supervisor and principal of AVTC until his retirement in 1995. He was a member and past master of St. Andrew's Masonic Lodge 7; honorary member of Supreme Council, 33 Degree, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, and was a Shriner. He was also a member of the YMCA board of directors; member of the LPN board, and a tireless worker for the Progressive Conservative party, serving on the provincial executive. Born in Lower Mount Thom, Pictou Co., she was a daughter of the late Milton and Christena (MacKay) Munro. She attended Provincial Normal College in Truro and taught school for a number of years. MacLEAN, John Gilbert (Chink) - 68, Dartmouth, passed away May 21, 1998, at home. Born in Sydney, he was a son of Sadie (MacLean), Halifax, and the late John Dane MacLean, Sydney. He was a graduate of Sydney Academy in 1947. He was employed with the provincial and federal health departments for many years. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a real estate broker in the Halifax/Dartmouth area. John's club and community affiliations over the years included the Dartmouth Curling Club, Banook Canoe Club, Kiwanis Club, Canadian Public Health Association and recently the Austinville Owls Club. He was also a member of St. James United Church. He is survived by his loving wife, the former Joan Moreshead, Dartmouth; daughters, Cindy (Mrs. Darrell Marshall), Dartmouth; Ann (Mrs. Robert Young), Hammonds Plains; Brenda (Mrs. Tony Dunkerley), Ottawa; son, Peter, Dartmouth; sister, Peggy (Mrs. Gordon McArthur), Halifax; brother, Gary, Burke, Va.; beautiful grandchildren, Madison, Lachi, Mitchell, Andrea, Christopher and Alexander. MacLEAN, Katherine Mary - 95, died May 5, 1998, in Presidential Nursing Home, Quincy, Mass. Born November 3, 1902, in Trout River, East Lake Ainslie, she was a daughter of the late Donald N. and Christy F. (MacKay) MacLean. She worked in Sydney for several years before moving to the Boston area in 1928, where she was employed by Hixon Electric Co. until her retirement. She then took up residence in Fenno House, Quincy, where she lived for 25 years. She returned to Lake Ainslie regularly while still in good health and was extremely proud of her Cape Breton roots. Surviving are longtime friends, Tina MacDougall and June Saluti; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Donald, Norman, John T.; sister, Annie. Funeral was held May 8 in Deware Funeral Home, Quincy, Mass., Rev. Adolph Wismar officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Jamaica Plains, Mass.
McLEAN, DR. J. DOUGLAS - The death of Dr. John Douglas McLean, 310 Woodward Ave., Saint John, N.B., husband of Dorothy Lynn (Keating) McLean, occurred on Thursday evening, June 10, 1998, in Saint John Regional Hospital. Dr. McLean was born in Chatham, N.B., son of the late Murdo and Edith (Martin) McLean, graduated from St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, and Dalhousie Medical School, Halifax, and had started his internship at Saint John General Hospital, N.B., in May of 1959. He had done his post graduate studies in psychiatry at Dalhousie University and at various hospitals in Saint John and Newfoundland. Dr. McLean had served as an associate professor of psychiatry with Dalhousie University from 1972-1997. He had served as president of the staff of Saint John Regional Hospital in 1975, and had been associated with the provincial hospital in Saint John for many years and had served as director of psychiatric education from 1966-1974 and as director of St. Joseph's Hospital consulting staff from 1966-1986. He was a member of the Canadian Medical Association, the Mental Health Committee, and a member of the General Council of the Medical Association. He served as president of the New Brunswick Psychiatric Association from 1967-1968 and served as chairman of the board of directors of the New Brunswick Medical Association from 1981-1986 and served as president of the Canadian Psychiatric Association from 1977-1978. Dr. McLean was a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and served in various committees. He was a member of the American College of Psychiatry and had written many publications. He was a former member of the board of governors of Centracare Inc. and had served as a visiting professor to the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University and Memorial University. Dr. McLean was a member of St. Pius X Parish. He is survived by his wife, D. Lynn; sons, Douglas (Karen), Saint John; Andrew (Dawne), Wainwright, Alta.; Stephen (Lee), Saint John; daughters, Elizabeth Harris (Kenneth), Saint John; Anne McLean-Sanchez (Onassis), Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic; Mary White (Andrew), Saint John; sister, Ainslie Bradford (Brock), St. Andrews; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Kingston and Rena Keating, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Katherine, Johnathan, Joseph and Michael Harris, Christopher and Anna McLean, Matthew McLean and Jamie White; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. MacLEAN, David A. - 45, Mount Uniacke, formerly of Woodside, died July 1, 1998, in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of Dewey and Rhoda (Horne) MacLean, Dartmouth. He was employed with Air Canada until the time of his illness. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Calais Branch 162. He loved hunting, fishing and boating. MacLEAN, John Joseph - 86, 21 Haig St., Sydney, died July 18, 1998, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in North Sydney and raised in Gillis Lake, he was a son of the late Peter and Mary (Morrison) MacLean. Known as Big John, he was well known in the local area as a Scottish fiddler. He was a member of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society and the Sydney Scottish Violins. He lived and farmed in his earlier years in the East Bay area and worked during that time as a driver for the Gordon Bus Company. He retired in 1977 from the maintenance staff at the Cape Breton Hospital and prior to that had worked at both Xavier College and Sydney Steel. Surviving are children, Allan, Ancaster, Ont.; Ann, Clare Sasco, Sydney; Ed, Halifax; Charlie, Dingwall; Joan Carson, Calgary; 16 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Mary Gertrude MacLean; brother, Charlie; sisters, Catherine Green, Agnes MacDonald, Margaret Byrne. He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney. McLEAN, Rev. Claude H. - 61, Windsor, died July 23, 1998, in Hants Community Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Simon and Germain (Dion) McLean. He received his post-secondary education at St. Mary's University and Holy Heart Seminary, and was ordained to the priesthood on April 4, 1964 by Archbishop J. Gerald Berry. For 34 years he served the people of the Archdiocese of Halifax faithfully as an assistant priest and pastor in several parishes. Following his ordination, he was appointed for a brief period of time to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Halifax. He then went on to serve for three years as an assistant priest at St. Paul's Parish, Dartmouth. Between 1967 and 1972 he served as an assistant priest at St. Michael's in Halifax. He then took up responsibilities as chaplain at St. Patrick's High School from 1972 to 1978, during which time he resided at St. Catherine's and at St. Theresa's Parish, Halifax. Between 1979 and 1984, he was co-pastor at St. John Vianney Parish, Lower Sackville. He then took a year's sabbatical to study at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash. Upon his return, he was involved in diocesan responsibilities for a year. He then served as pastor at St. Joseph's Parish, Bridgewater and St. Mary's Mission, Hantsport from 1986 to 1992. From 1992 until his death, he was pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Windsor. Aside from his many years of dedicated service in parishes throughout the Archdiocese, Father Claude was Spiritual Director of the Diocesan Catholic Women's League. He is also remembered for his deep commitment to renewal in the area of religious education. He obtained a Master of Arts degree in Religious Education from St. Michael's College, Vermont, and in 1974 helped to develop a Religious Education Program which was adopted as a credit course in the regular academic curriculum at St. Patrick's High School. This course ultimately became a model for the development of other such programs across the country. Surviving is his sister, Nancy, Fredericton. MacLEAN, Hector - 91, Merigomish, Pictou Co., died July 25, 1998, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Big Island, Pictou Co., he was a son of the late Hector and Ella (Smith) MacLean. He was a resident of Big Island before moving to Merigomish about 43 years ago. He was a member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Merigomish, where he served as an elder. He was a member of Norton Lodge 6, IOOF. He worked as a fisherman and lumberman and also owned a sawmill in Merigomish. Surviving are his wife, the former Kilmeny Gordon; son, Gordon, Plymouth; a grandson; two step-grandchildren; sisters, Dolena (Mrs. Sidney Quinton), Everett, Mass.; Doris (Mrs. Roy Grant), Moncton, N.B.; several nieces and nephews. MacLEAN, (Baillie) Muriel May - 78, Matlyn Place, Onslow, died September 29, 1998, after a lengthy illness. Born in River John, Pictou Co., she was a daughter of the late William and Alice (Miller) Baillie. She was a member of United Memorial Church, Halifax, and of Frazee Rebekah Lodge 33, River John. Muriel and her husband, George, farmed in Hedgeville for several years before moving to Halifax in 1954, when she became employed with Edward's Fine Foods until retirement in 1982. Muriel was a volunteer at Camp Hill Hospital for 71Ú2 years until her health declined. She is survived by daughter, Alice (Mrs. Bill Edison), Ottawa; son, Vernon (Alison), Dartmouth; daughter-in-law, Debbie, Saint John, N.B.; sister-in-law, Margaret Baillie, Hamilton, Ont.
