MacLEAN (MacKinnon), Isabelle - formerly of Sydney and Halifax, died January 5, 1999, in Shoreham Village, Chester, after a long and full life. Born in 1901, in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John and Hattie Catherine (Ferguson). She was predeceased by her husband, Robert John; stepfather, John D. Matheson; sisters, Hazel and Alexandra; several siblings in infancy. She is survived by daughters, Hazel (Mrs. Peter) Gordon, Chester; Marilyn (Mrs. David) Janigan, Halifax; grandchildren, Robert and James Gordon, Eleanor Jarrett (Gordon) and Karen Janigan; great-grandchildren, Angus, Mathijs and Katie Gordon, John Janigan-Mills and Emma Jarrett. She graduated as a nurse from City of Sydney Hospital in 1924. She worked at the Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic in Sydney during the Second World War, and in the maternity unit of City Hospital until retirement in 1966. She was active in Bairncroft, City Hospital alumni association and in St. Andrew's Church. While in Halifax, she was a lifetime member of the Archibald MacMechan Chapter of IODE and in the UCW of St. Matthew's United Church. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, January 15, in St. Matthew's Church, Halifax, with interment to follow at a later date in Hardwood Hills Cemetery, Sydney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shoreham Village, Chester, where she received kind and loving care. Arrangements entrusted to Davis Funeral Home, Chester.

MacLEAN, (MacLeod) Marion W. - Age 73, Gairloch Lake, Pictou Co., died on January 8, 1999, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in Salt Springs, Pictou Co., she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret (MacLeod) MacLeod. She resided in Fairview, Halifax for over 40 years, returning to reside in Pictou County 10 years ago. She is survived by her husband, William (Bill); sons, Bill (wife Denise), Maple Ridge, B.C.; Barry (wife Patricia), Lower Sackville; daughter, Lynn Murphy (husband John), Lower Sackville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brother, John MacLeod (wife Beth), Salt Springs; sisters, Janet Campbell, Truro; Irene Favier (husband Murray), Truro. She was predeceased by brothers, Ivan and Vernon; sister, Eva MacLellan. Visitation will be held today, January 10, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Eagles Funeral Home, Westville, from where her funeral will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Mich MacVeigh officiating. Burial will be in Gairloch Cemetery.

MacLEAN, James Leslie, Lt.-Cmdr. (retired) RCN - 76, died in the early hours of January 9, 1999. The only son of James Bertram MacLean and Jessie Mae (Grant) MacLean, he was the first baby to be born in the New Glasgow hospital on August 21, 1922. Raised in MacLellans Brook and Springville, he received his early education in Pictou County one-room school houses and later at Dalhousie University. With the outbreak of the Second World War, he served in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm, receiving pilot flying training from the RCAF in St. Eugene, Ont., St. Jean, Que. and Kingston, Ont. In 1946, he returned to Dalhousie University  to finish his studies before embarking on a career in the Royal Canadian Navy which spanned more than 20 years and took him and his young family across Canada and back. Following retirement from the Canadian Navy, he worked as a media communicator for the Nova Scotia Government in Education, Health and Information Services. He was very active in community life as a member of the Naval Officers' Association of Canada, Royal United Services Institute, Navy League of Canada, Cadet Training, Sigma Chi  fraternity and Crow's Nest Sea Going Officers' Club of St. John's, Nfld. He was also the education liaison executive with the Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island Branch of the Monarchist League of Canada and a trustee of the the Sackville Trust. He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Brannan (Steadman) MacLean, Sackville, N.B., to whom he was wed for 50 years. He also leaves behind daughters, Jennifer (Jay) Charlotte MacLean, Halifax; Marilyn Gray Ross, Bedford; Catherine Patricia MacLean, Dartmouth; son, James Alexander Grant MacLean, Halifax; and grandchildren, Geoffrey Grant Ross, Iain MacLean Ross and Morrigan MacLean. He was predeceased by his sister, Charlotte Archibald MacLean. His family will carry him in their hearts always. Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax today from 7-9 p.m and on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m., followed by a private family service. MacLEAN, Rev. Randolph Douglas - 83, died January 13, 1999, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late Neil and Margaret (MacKenzie) MacLean. He was a graduate of Dalhousie University (BA), The Presbyterian College, Montreal (BD) and the Atlantic School of Theology (MTh). Ordained to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Canada in 1941, he served in St. Andrew's Church, Moncton, N.B.; Montague Pastoral Charge, P.E.I.; St. Andrew's Church, Huntington, Que.; St. Andrew's Church, Belleville, Ont.; St. James (Pollock), Glasgow, Scotland and Knox Church, Halifax.  He retired to Boularderie, Cape Breton and was a lifelong supporter of the NDP and the Montreal Canadians. Surviving are daughter, Iris (Mrs. Gordon Marriott), Bradford, Ont.; Iona MacLean (Mrs. Glenn Cooper), Pictou; two grandchildren; a great-grandson. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth C. MacLEAN, (Ryan) Mary Alma - 87, 220 Cartier St., Sydney, died January 26, 1999, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Point Tupper, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred and Sarah Ann (MacIntyre) Ryan. She was a member of St. Theresa's Parish, Sydney, and spent her life caring for her home and family. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are daughters, Sarabelle, Gabarus; Annie, Smithville, Ont.; sons, Wilfred, Mira Road; Alex, South River, Ont.; Eddie, Gordon, Sydney; 23 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel Angus; daughter, Margaret in infancy; sons, Sidney, Hector; brothers, Colin, Joseph; a great-grandchild. MACLEAN, (Schaefer) Nora Delphine - 85, Halifax, passed away January 31, 1999, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Toronto, Ont., she was a daughter of the late George and Neta Schaefer. Before retirement she taught in Toronto and Moncton. She is survived by her son, James and his wife Deborah, Halifax; grandson, Andrew, and sister, June Schaefer, Orillia, Ont. She was predeceased by her husband, Owen Leslie. MacLean. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 3, in Cathedral Church of All Saints, Tower Road, Halifax. Born in Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Sarah Catherine (MacKeigan) Weir. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. MacLEAN, (MacLennan) Margaret Effie - 79, 120 Kitchener St., formerly of Lingan Road, Sydney, died February 8, 1999, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John and Effie (MacKay) MacLennan. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Bethel AMS and Whitney Pier Pensioners Club. Surviving are daughters, Margaret Rose MacAulay, Sydney; Sharon (Mrs. Brent Dous), Calgary; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Cassie French, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas; sisters, Christie MacRae, Maude Gosse; brothers, Alex, Roderick, John, Edward, Wilbert. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. MacLEAN, (MacDonald) Mary Eva - 98, Sheet Harbour, Halifax Co., passed away in Duncan MacMillan Nursing Home, Sheet Harbour, on February 12, 1999. Born and educated in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Adalaide MacDonald. She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Sheet Harbour. During her earlier years she was employed as a secretary for Sheet Harbour Lumber Company. She was the wife of the late Dr. J. David MacLean, who predeceased her in 1968. For 26 years she enjoyed much of her life in Pictou, where she raised her family and was active in many organizations doing volunteer work. For the past 30 years she resided in Sheet Harbour. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy MacLean, Hampden, Me.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandsons. She was predeceased by her son, D.A. "Sandy" MacLean, a former Deputy Minister of Fisheries in Nova Scotia, in 1992;  eight brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 25,  at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Sheet Harbour, Rev. Gilbert Bertrand, OMI, officiating. MacLEAN, Gordon Freeman - 74, 18 King St., Florence, died February 26, 1999, in Northside General Hospital. Born in Florence, he was a son of the late John and Mamie (MacLean) MacLean. He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence. He was employed by Devco Coal Mines, retiring in 1990 with 49 years of service. He was an avid sports fan. Surviving are his wife, the former Lillian Pye; daughters, Darlene (Mrs. David Bond), North Sydney; Carol (Mrs. Jake Wall), Bras d'Or; Laura Marsh, Ontario; Norma Jean (Mrs. Dean Denney), Florence; Michelle Pye, North Sydney; sons, Norman Pye, Sydney Mines; Ronnie, at home; sisters, Leora (Mrs. Sammy Keeling), Florence; Sadye Simpson, Sydney Mines; brother, Norman, North Sydney; 15 grandchildren. MacLEAN, Cleophas (Olie) - 75, 283 Kings Rd., Dominion, died March 4, 1999, in Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Dominion, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Margaret (McLeod) MacLean. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport; a member of the CWL for many years, and was a former member of the parish council. She was one of the founding members and co-leader of the First Bridgeport Girl Guide Troop for many years. She taught school for 40 years and spent the years before her retirement as principal of Central School, Dominion. Also, at one time she was secretary of the Retired Teachers' Association. During her retirement, she spent her time doing two things she enjoyed - spending time with her family and friends and traveling the world. Surviving are niece, Diane O'Neil, who resided with her; brothers, Simon, Glace Bay; Melvin, Reserve; sisters, Lorraine McKinnon, Glace Bay; Audrey (Mrs. Gerard McNeil), Dominion. She was predeceased by sisters, Annie, Loretta, Mildred, Margaret, Susan, Carmella, Selina; brothers, Charles, Ambrose, Hector, Lauchlin, Robert, Leo, Raphael, Gerald. MacLEAN, John Neil (Jack) - 84, Rear Main Street, Reserve Mines, died March 12, 1999, in Glace Bay Health Care Complex, South Street, Glace Bay. Born in Prince Edward Island, he was a son of the late Neil and Effie MacLean. He was a veteran of the Second World War with the Canadian Army. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Dr. Cecil John Sparrow Branch 2, Reserve Mines. He was employed for many years as a carpenter with M.R. Chappels, Sydney. Surviving are his wife, the former Alice LeLeivre; sons, Keith, Boularderie; Kevin, Boisdale; Olive, Dartmouth. He was predeceased by son, Harvey. There will be no visitation. McLEAN (Ratchford), Adeline Bernadette - 83, Windsor Elms, and formerly of St. Croix, Hants Co., passed away peacefully in her sleep, after a short illness, on Saturday, March 13, 1999, at the Elms, surrounded by her children and loved ones. Born on October 28, 1915, in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Co., Adeline was a daughter of the late Allen and Katherine "Kattie" (MacDonald) McLean. Adeline was a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, and loved by all who knew her. She was famous for her generosity and many acts of kindness. No one left her home hungry or empty-handed. Deeply devoted to her children, family and faith, she had a great love of music and had composed several songs of her own. She had been a resident of the Windsor Elms for 10 years. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and community. Born in East Ferry, Digby Co., she was a daughter of the late Curtis and Frances Catherine (Buckley) Stanton. She was a long time resident of Five Islands. Surviving are her husband Daniel; daughters Danielle, Constance, Five islands; Virginia McLean, Amherst; June McLean, Banff, Alta.; Janet (Mrs. Thomas Mitchell), Back Bay, N.B.; Cathy (Mrs. Jim Rephin), Cranbrook, B.C.; sons, Larry, Daniel, Five Islands; Rev. McLEAN, James Douglas - Berkeley Residence, Halifax, died March 25, 1999, in QEII Health Sciences Centre after a brief illness. Born in Regina, Sask., on February 12, 1920, he was the son of Archibald and Margaret (Bowman) McLean. A graduate in dentistry from the University of Toronto and post-graduate studies from the University of Michigan, he was a captain in the Canadian Dental Corps during the Second World War. Following the war, he both practiced in Edmonton and was a professor of dentistry at the University of Alberta. He was the dean of dentistry at Dalhousie University from 1954 to 1975 and continued as a professor of dentistry until he retired in 1985. During his tenure he was instrumental in opening the new Dental School building. In 1987 he received an honorary doctor of laws from Dalhousie and was subsequently named dean emeritus. He was a member of International College of Dentists and a fellow on the American College of Dentists. He was an active volunteer in numerous professional and charitable organizations, including the boards of the Nova Scotia and Canadian Dental Associations; Fort Massey United Church, as clerk of session, Sunday school superintendent and chairman of the Board of Management; chairman of the Board of Pine Hill Divinity College (Atlantic School of Theology); president of the Nova Scotia Branch of the Canadian Bible Society; president of the Nova Scotia branch of the Red Cross Society; president of the Canadian Red Cross Society; and president of the Neptune Theatre Foundation. He is survived by sons, Douglas and Donald, Calgary; daughters, Ainslie Moignard, Vancouver, and Leslie, Halifax; six grandchildren and other family. Visiting will be held at Snow's Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax, on Tuesday, March 30, 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Fort Massey United Church, Halifax, Rev. MacLEAN, James Innis - Halifax, died April 3, 1999, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Cheticamp in 1942, he was a son of the late Henry and Mabel MacLean. He retired in 1994 as assistant director of the Halifax Recreation Department. He served on the provincial executive of the Recreation Association of Nova Scotia, was a member of the national board and president of the John Howard Society of Nova Scotia. He represented Canada as a delegate to the United Nations Conference on Crime and Crime Prevention held in Venezuela. He spent many years as volunteer coordinator of Twixt Teen at the Halifax YMCA. He is survived by his wife, the former Anne Shires; daughter, Patricia (Artie); sons, James and Stephen-John; grandson, Arthur Thomas; brother, Wayne (Anne); twin brother, Dick (Carol), and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held in St. Andrew's United Church, Coburg Road and Robie Street, on Wednesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. No flowers by request. MacLEAN, (Moody) Irene Ann - 59, 19 Kent St., Sydney, died  April 4, 1999 at the Cape Breton Hospital, Sydney. Born in Malagawatch, she was a daughter of the late James and Annie Bessie (Campbell) Moody. She lived and worked for many years in Massachusetts and was employed in Sydney by the City Homemakers. Surviving are children Dwayne, Traverse City, Michigan; Kim, Sault St. Marie, Michigan; Wendy, San Francisco, Cla.; long-time companion, Blaise Kennedy, Sydney; sisters, Murdena, Red Point; Florence, Orangedale; brother, Dan Moody, Cambridge, On. MacLEAN (MacInnis), Alena J. D. - Died April 10, 1999, in Goddard Center for Transitional Care in Stoughton, Mass. She was 91. Wife of the late John A.C.; mother of Neil J. MacLean and Christena S. Locke, both of Stoughton; John A. C. Jr., Pembroke, and the late Allan D.; mother-in-law of Alexis "Lucky", Janice, Louise, Maria and Dan; preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers; also survived by 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Born in Glenville, Inverness Co., she was educated in Cape Breton schools. She worked as a knitter at Shawmut Mill in Stoughton for over 20 years. She retired at age 65. After graduating from the School of Nursing, she worked in the nursery of the Aberdeen Hospital for some eight years. She was a member of Trinity United Church, New Glasgow. She is survived by her husband, Woody; twins, Marla Dawne, Halifax, and Matthew Darren, at home; brother, Wade, Halifax; niece, Abigail and nephew Grant, both of Kentville. MacLEAN (Kyle), Berdie Martina "Tena" - 78, 37 Dunromin Ave., Bible Hill, died after a courageous battle with kidney disease. The passing occurred in the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, at sunrise on Thursday, July 15, 1999. Born in Parrsboro, she was the daughter of the late Berton and Reta (Morse) Kyle (Parrsboro). She was employed with Zeller's Ltd. as well as Stanfield's Ltd. for a number of years. Her creativity found expression in bowling, music, flowers, gardening, clogging and her love of animals. She was a member of St. David's United Church, Bible Hill, singing in the church choir for many years. Her greatest love in life was her family. Left with loving memories are her husband of 56 years, Dan Angus MacLean; and her children, Douglas (Marilyn) Dartmouth; Bill (Shirley), Bridgewater; Marty (Audrey), Bible Hill; and Kathryn (Paul) Peppard, Kentville. MacLEAN, Gertrude - Widow of Dr. A. Charles MacLean, New Richmond, Que, died September 29, 1999, in St. Martha's Hospital, Antigonish, at the age 97, 7 months. She was born in Cape Breton, but she and her husband made their home in New Richmond from the time of their marriage in 1924. She remained there after her husband's death in 1975 until 1991. Since which time she had been a resident in nursing homes in Nova Scotia, her latter days being spent in the fine care given by the Green Meadows Community Home in North Grant. Mrs. MacLean is survived by children; Peter (Patsy), Malignant Cove, Mary (John A. Campbell), Cascapedia, Que. and Dorothy (Gordon E. Bryant), Hammond, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. McLEAN, (Lockhart) Hilda Pauline - 89, Fairview Villa, formerly of Olivet Street and Ralston Avenue, Halifax, passed away Thursday, October 7, 1999, in the Villa. Born March 30, 1910, in River Glade, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Charles Wallace and Iva Myrtle (Jonah) Lockhart. She was an active member of Bayers Road United Baptist Church and before that First Baptist Church. She was active in missionary group IODE and Lionettes. She was an avid bridge player. She graduated from the Montreal General Hospital as a registered nurse in 1932; married Dr. Jack Edward McLean D. V. M. and moved to Halifax in 1936. She nursed in Moncton during the war. In later years she worked for the hospitality club, welcoming newcomers to Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack in 1953 and two brothers in infancy. A nursing graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay, she had just celebrated her 50th year graduation anniversary in 1998. He was a resident of the River Road for the past five years prior to which he had resided in Hamilton, Ont. for 32 years. He had worked for STELCO Steel Manufacturing in Ontario and after moving to Pictou Co., he had been employed at the Fisheries Training School, Pictou as a commissionaire. He was a member of the St. Columba United Church, Hopewell. He is survived by his wife, the former Sybil Reid, Churchville; son, Aron (Janet); daughter, Debbie, all of Hamilton, Ont.; grandchildren, Chrystal, Sarah, Arian; sister, Joan (Mrs. John MacDonald), Winnipeg; and by a brother, David MacLean, British Columbia. He was also a veteran of the Second World War, retiring from civil service as a painter. Rannie was a loving father and a husband of 52 years. MacLEAN, James Leo - 81, 125 Inglis St., and a lifelong resident of Ashby died December 28, 1999, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Ottawa Brook, he was a son of the late Archie and Tina (MacNeil) MacLean. He was a member of St. Theresa's Parish, Sydney. He served overseas during the Second World War with RCAF and was a member of the Ashby Branch 138 Royal Canadian Legion. In his early days he played hockey and baseball in most of the leagues of his day. His greatest love in sports was for harness racing. He was employed at the Sydney Steel Corp. for 46 years in the Open Mechanical Department retiring in 1974. Surviving are his wife, the former Agnes Marguerite Scott; sons, Richard, High River, Alta.; Leonard, Sussex, N.B.; Robert, Sydney; Norman, High River, Alta.; Darren, High River, Alta.; sisters, Mrs. Theresa Rostick, New Waterford; Mrs. Mary McGrath, Sydney; Mrs. Eileen Johnson, Sydney; brothers, Redmond, Sydney; Mickey, Ontario; nine grandchildren.
