Chapter 27

Nick's point of view

"Nick, come here," I heard my Mother call me from the kitchen. I stood up from the couch and approached her. "What is this?"

"My report card," I said feeling my face drop.

"And why may I ask do you have a D in Algebra?" I tried to think up a reasonable excuse and sighed. I knew I was going to have my privileges cut back.

"Well, I've been missing school lately because of the group. And I do hang out with Amanda and my friends alot. I'm sorry Mom."

"And a C in English and Health? Do you need help? I can hire you a tutor if you want Nick, it's not a problem." I got the feeling my Mother was implying I wasn't as smart as I should be.

"No, I'm fine. It's just hard to keep up with singing, school, my girlfriend, friends, and practicing driving. I promise I'll bring it up Mom. If it gets worse I'll get a tutor. Okay?" I said hoping she would let me off easier. Wrong. But what she said wasn't good on my behalf at all.

"You better bring it up. And I know just how to solve that. Honey, sit down." Oh no, I thought. She was planning on having a "talk". I hated those. All she wanted to do was embarrass me and make me feel uncomfortable.

"I think you and Amanda see enough of each other. Maybe too much," she began.

"Mom-"

"And I think you should bring your relationship to a hault. You two are getting a little, too close, if you know what I mean." She gave me that look, that said "you better be using protection if you're doing what I think you're doing."

"Mom, we don't do that kind of stuff. We're just teenagers for crying out loud."

"Exactly, that's why this should end. You two are too close as it is, and having to maintain a steady relationship, especially when you're not supposed to have one in the public eye, isn't best for you."

"Mom, I can't believe you're asking me to do that! What right do you have to tell me that?!?" I stood up and screamed. I couldn't stop what I was really feeling from exiting my mouth.

"I have the right because I am your Mother! What gives you the right to yell at me like this? Nothing! Now I don't want you seeing that, Amanda girl anymore. She's too much of a distraction for you, she said, putting Amanda off as some piece of trash.

"This is bull Mom," I mumbled under my breath, just loud enough for her to hear.

"That's the end of it Nick. I don't want to hear it anymore. Go to your room."

"See if I care." I shoved the chair under the table and stomped down the stairs to my room. This wasn't right! And no matter how powerful my parents think they are, they can't stop me from seeing Amanda.

I plopped down on my bed and let the anger sink through my head.

"She can't tell me to stop seeing her. See if I care what they say." I reached over to my cordless phone and let my fingers do the memorized dialing.

"Is Amanda there?"

My phone rang and I reached to the left of me to retrieve it.

"I got it Dad," I said into the phone.

"Hello?"

"Hey Amanda," I heard Nick's voice sound angrily.

"What's wrong? You sound mad."

"I am. No, I'm furious. My Mother's being unfair."

"You got your report card too?" I said looking down at my fingernails. "My Dad wasn't mad, he just wasn't too happy. But I guess he understands with my Mother dying and all."

"Well at least you didn't get punished," Nick grumbled.

"What did you get taken away? The car? Singing?" I guessed.

"Worse."

"Telephone? T.v.? Video Games? Grounded?"

"Worse."

I thought and couldn't think of anything else to have taken away.

"What then?"

"You," he said flatly.

"Huh?" I asked confused.

"I'm not allowed to see you anymore. She told me to break it off with you. She thought you were causing too much of a 'distraction' for me. Yeah right, if anything's distracting me it's her nagging me constantly. I wish I had a remote control for her so I could push mute."

"Nick, we're not allowed to date anymore?" I asked, feeling tears well up in my eyes.

"Nope."

"So what are we going to do then? Just ignore each other?"

"Nothing different," he said. "She can't make me stop seeing you. I love you Amanda."

"I love you too Nick, but that's your Mom. You're supposed to respect her at all times and listen to her."

"I don't care. She can't make me stop seeing you Amanda, she can't."

"Well we're gonna have to do some sneaking around then." I felt my lips curve into a smile. "I actually kinda like that. Danger. It's number one on my list of excitement."

"Mine too." Nick shared a smile on the other end of the phone. "Maybe this will bring us closer together. And even help me with my schoolwork. I can just copy off of you."

"Yeah, yeah. That's what you think. If you want my homework, you'll have to come and get it." I layed down on my back and placed my feet against the wall. I don't think his Mother's order would change us one bit.

"Mom, I'm going to the library," I called out. I adjusted the bookbag onto the center of my back and looked up the stairs into the kitchen.

"Alright Nick, but don't be out too late."

"I won't." I flashed her a quick smile and exited the front door towards the car. I couldn't believe that I was going to the library. I NEVER went to the library. But I had a feeling that it would now be me and Amanda's favorite place to be.

The library was the oldest trick in the book, and my Mother didn't suspect a thing! It was too good to be true. Not only could I possibly improve my grades, but I got to see Amanda at the same time. I was quite satisfied with myself and the plan.

I drove the five minute way to the library and quickly headed in. Once in, I scanned the room anxiously, my heart beating fast in high hopes of stealing another kiss from her, but no such luck. She wasn't there.

I felt my heart drop into my stomach, but I just found an empty table close to the front. I'd easily see her when she got there.

I was just pulling out my report due for next week when I glanced up and saw it. It was a sight so sweet to my eyes, giving them a message to send to my heart, and make it thump so loud I could hear it echo in my ears. Her hair was pulled in a messy bun to hold the hair up on top of her head, giving the cool breeze room to cool down her neck.

The sleeveless tank top showed off her boney collar bone, slim arms, and a neck I could imagine kissing with my lips.

As I was gawking subconsciously at the beautiful site, Amanda walked in behind her.
