Chapter 28

Amanda's point of view
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As soon as I walked in the door, I felt Nick's eyes dart to me. How cute, he had been watching the door for when I would enter.
"Excuse me," I said to a a girl around my age who was standing in my way. She flashed a gorgeous smile and moved out of the way. Apparently she had never been in a library and got lost looking for the exit. What a flake.
I gave Nick a brilliant smile and he returned it with only half as much enthusiasm. I hope he wasn't feeling guilty for deceiving his mother.
"Hey." I sat across from him and placed my bookbag on the table. I slowly leaned forward towards him. "I have a secret to tell you," I whispered.
"Oh yeah," he whispered back, his smile growing by the second, "and what would that be?"
"This." I softly planted my lips on his, letting them sit there for a moment. Electricity ran through my body from head to toe, he always did that to me.
"Never heard better," he said.
"Hey, you have Ms. Hillward, don't you?" I asked him referring to my Algebra teacher.
"Yeah," he replied. "Why?"
"Did you get that assignment on the mathematician report?" I watched him hold up the paper he had been grammar and spell checking.
"I was just doing it."
"Oh. I looked people up and I couldn't find hardly any information on them. Who di-" I stopped in midsentence. He wasn't paying attention.
I turned around in my seat to see what he had been staring at and found myself looking at the flake I had encountered earlier. I laughed and turned around back to Nick.
"Anyway, who did you do your rep-" I stopped. "Nick?"
"Huh?" His eyes parted from the girl and landed back on mine. I saw his face turn a slight shade of pink.
"Nevermind." I felt my heart sink, feeling nothing but pain and glanced downward. We both were silent, trying to act as if we had something better to do, but we both knew what was on each other's minds.
Had he really been staring at that girl or had it been my imagination? I had to know.
"Nick?" I whispered.
"Hmmm?" He looked up, trying not to seem embarrassed.
"Were...do you think she's pretty?"
"Who?" he asked, fiddling with the edge of his pencil. He knew very well who I was talking about.
"Forget it." I sighed and returned back to my work. How could I concentrate now?
"She had nice hair."
"Huh?" I looked up from my paper and glanced into his sorrowful eyes.
"She had pretty hair. I like the color."
"Nick, that's ridiculous."
"My eyes belong to you. No one's as pretty as you are." I felt my cheeks grow hot and I just glanced down at my paper again. Well that was solved.
"Hey, can you try to figure out what this says? I can't read the teacher's handwriting." I went to hand him my graded paper and saw his eyes focused straight ahead again. I didn't have to guess who caught his eye because I already knew. However, I ignored Nick and continued to act like I didn't notice "He has messy handwriting."
"No, I don't know what this says either." He gave a weak smile and handed it back. I shrugged my shoulders and pretended to be busy, this act wasn't working anymore. I couldn't stay here.
I glanced at my watch and groaned.
"Nick, I have to get home. Do you mind?"
"No, not at all." We gathered our things and began heading toward the exit.
"Wait a second, let me put this book back real quick." I left him standing by the entrance and wondered back over to the non-fiction section looking for the place I had gotten the book from.
"I guess that's where it goes." I always had trouble with putting library books back in the correct spot. I didn't care too much, the librarian would return it to it's original position.
I began walking back to Nick, when I stopped in my tracks. The blonde girl from earlier was talking to Nick. I shook my head and began walking toward him. It didn't bother me TOO much until she started touching his arm, flirting with him.
"Come on Nick," I said with a little more anger than I had meant to. I walked quickly to Nick's car, the anger rising up in my throat with each second, along with a lump causing me to urge myself to hold back tears.
"Amanda, wait up!" I heard Nick shout. I continued walking, just as fast as I had been before. "Mandy! I'm sorry. Look, I'm sorry."
"What do you want from me Nick? Huh? Blonde hair? Blue eyes? A body that looks like I shove my finger down my throat every night after dinner? Is that it?"
"No, you're perfect the way you are."
"Then why were you staring at her like that! And the way you looked at her when she was talking to you, like you were in love with HER, not me." I clamped my mouth shut, holding back the tears.
"I...I'm sorry." Nick knew it was true. Every last word I had said was the truth, and he knew it, he just couldn't say it. "I didn't know it looked that way. You know I love you. Amanda, look at me," he said with his voice softening. He brought his hand up to turn my face towards him. I resisted.
"Just take me home," I choked. I could barely speak, tears now slowly sliding down my cheeks.
He unlocked the door and held it open for me. I got inside of the car and slammed the door. I couldn't believe this.
We began driving back home, and I thought about apologizing for acting this way over nothing, but I couldn't. No matter how simple the situation, I was still hurt.
Nick slowed the car down and pulled up alongside of my house.
"Amanda, I have no interest in her what-so-ever. She began talking to me, not the other way around."
"You know what Nick? I really don't want to talk to you right now. Not only did you hurt me by staring at her through the entire time we spent in the library, but you were flirting with her. Do you know how unworthy that makes me feel? How horrible?"
"N-"
"No you don't. And that's 'cuse no one has ever done that to you in front of your face. Bye Nick. Thanks for the 'oh so wonderful time,'" I said sarcastically. I slammed the car door and began walking to my house. He didn't pull away, he was watching me safely enter my house. I couldn't stand the feel of his eyes on me so I began jogging to the safety of my room.
"Hi honey, how are you?" I heard my Father ask.
"Fine." I ran up the stairs and slammed my door. I just wanted to be alone right now, so I could cry my heart out. And that's exactly what I did.
Amanda slammed my car door and I sat there in pain watching her run to her house. I couldn't stand seeing her so torn up inside. I knew what I had done had hurt her, but I didn't realize I had done it until it was too late.
Lori, the girl at the library had attracted me, but nothing compared to Amanda. I couldn't be without her, she was my love, and that's what I needed right now. I couldn't let her go.
True, Lori was beautiful, but she was a complete airhead. She had no brains inside of her head, and anyone could see that with one word she would speak. Amanda was so much more than that. We connected on a level of both physical attraction, and the attraction I had to her mind and heart. Nothing could replace that.
After arriving at my own house, I left my car in the driveway. I entered the house only to have eyes immediately peering at me with anger.
"Where were you Nick?" I felt my stomach drop. My Mother. She obviously knew where I was, and who I really was with.
"The library."
"And who were you with?"
"No one," I replied, my voice barely audible.
"Try again."
I hesitated. I had to speak the truth or I would only burry myself deeper. "Amanda." I sighed, waiting for the punch line.
"Right. Go to your room, and if you ever lie to me again about the situation we've already discussed, you will be grounded until your next birthday."
I quickly headed downstairs into my room, escaping my Mother's evil glare.
"Next time you decide to go out with Amanda make sure you have her lie to her Father will you? Thanks a bunch."
I slammed my bedroom door in anger at myself. I knew I wouldn't get away with it. Although I was now in trouble, it didn't matter how long Amanda and I were kept apart. We weren't speaking to each other anyway.
